Monday Box Office Report

One of these new films is going to suck…your blood! There was an influx of new movies this past weekend at the American box office, from Adam Sandler in a family friendly, non-sparkly vampire film, through to Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon Levitt in Looper.

Only one of them could be king of the box office though, and between CGI family fun, to time travel paradoxes starring hitmen and something about pitching perfect, that top draw was…

Hotel Transylvania! The Genndy Tartakovsky directed film set a new record for September releases, kicking the stuffing out of previous champ,Sweet Home Alabama, by several million dollars.

Looper came in second, notching up a respectable total, but was still rather underwhelming, as the challenge of marketing an original, mature sci-fi film idea was evident here. As for everyone else, here’s a look at who made what;

  • Hotel Transylvania – $43 Million
  • Looper – $21.2 Million
  • End of watch – $8 Million
  • Trouble with the curve – $7.5 Million
  • House at the end of the street – $7.1 Million
  • Pitch perfect – $5.2 Million
  • Finding Nemo 3D – $4 Million
  • Resident Evil Retribution – $3 Million
  • Won’t back down – $2.7 Million

Lawless and The Possession dropped out of the top ten this past weekend, joined by Dredd, which is now languishing in the 11th spot on the charts. It’s been hard times for the lawman so far, as the current global total for his war on crime has barely scraped the $21 million mark so far.
