Public holidays may be a boon for the movie industry, but when they’re finished, it’s business as usual. The Fast and the Furious 6 may have won this past weekend at the box office, but it didn’t do nearly as well. Still, it did a helluva lot better than M Night Shasta McNasty’s latest flick, After Earth. Here’s a look at how much the top ten made at the North American box office this past weekend.

Falling way below expectations, After Earth opened in third place with a $27 million haul, being beaten to the punch by magic heist flick Now you see me and Fast and Furious 6. That makes for one of the lowest opening weekends in recent years for an M Night Shazam film, since the 2006 debut of Lasy in the water, which only managed to score $18 million back then. Here’s how everyone else did on the weekend.

  • Fast and Furious 6 – $34.5 Million
  • Now you see me – $28 Million
  • After Earth – $27 Million
  • Epic – $16.4 Million
  • Star Trek Into Darkness – $16.4 Million
  • The Hangover III – $15.9 Million
  • Iron Man 3 – $8 Million
  • The Great Gatsby – $6.2 Million
  • Yei Jawaani Hai – $1.6 Million
  • Mud – $1.2 Million

Epic is starting to flail at the moment, as the big budget flick only has two more weeks to make some cash before the next Pixar film, Monsters University arrives to devour that chunk of the demographic. Fast and Furious 6, while still number one, saw a decline of 65% in revenue from last weekend. $35 million is still a good number any way you slice it though, and the latest film is speeding towards the half a billion dollars mark right now. As for departures, this week saw 42, The Croods and Oblivion exit the top ten.

42 and The Croods have done some good business, but the $274 million worldwide tally for Oblivion has no doubt left a sour taste in the mouths of director Joseph Kosinski and his star, Tom Cruise.

  1. Saw F&F on Saturday. Great fun to watch! I also loved how they tied Tokyo Drift into the rest of the franchise. Can’t wait for number 7 🙂
