Monday Box Office Report: CONJURING 2 shrieks to the top in US, WARCRAFT gigantic in China

The-Conjuring-2

I really don’t mean to disrespect James Wan and The Conjuring 2. The director is an incredible filmmaker who almost single-handedly revived the art of proper spooky horror stories in Hollywood and has also proven hugely successful on the tentpole blockbuster front with Furious 7. So when his return to the horror genre is a critical smash hit and ends up top of the US box office chart on opening weekend, bringing in $40 million, then it deserves to be lauded. And I am doing just that. Laud, laud, laud. But I’m also trying to get through this paragraph as quickly as possible to tell the real big box office story of the weekend.

Warcraft-25-09

And that story is Warcraft. The Duncan Jones directed video game adaptation performed exactly as expected Stateside, meeting its meagre $24 million opening weekend estimates. There’s no doubt that is a disappointingly soft debut, but it’s also no surprise. No, the real headline grabbing result here is that, as appeared to be the case at the end of last week, Warcraft has been absolutely gigantic in China. After its incredible $91 million two-day start in the Asian movie market, it just never took its foot off the gas going on to dominate across its 5-day weekend thanks to the local Dragon Boat holiday festival. When the dust had settled and everything was accounted for, Warcraft had notched up a whopping $156 million in China alone after just 5 days. Add in the US figures as well as the other regions where it’s also opened, and the fantasy blockbuster currently has a global total of $285 million on a $160 million price tag. For the Horde!

Meanwhile, back in the US of A, Now You See Me 2 also managed to pull a rabbit some money out of a hat, as it opened with $23 million. Whether this is a good amount or not is up to your perspective. It was pretty much on point with estimates for the ensemble magic heist caper, but it’s also $6 million less that original’s 2013 opening, and that was a movie that about $15-25 million cheaper to make. The real test to see whether this is an abraca-dud is to see what happens next week.

The rest of the high profile entries on the US chart though is definitely a study in under-performance with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, X-Men: Apocalypse and Alice Through the Looking Glass all continuing to just pick up scraps. X-Men has done the best business out of the bunch thus far, as it’s international figures have buoyed a less-than-ideal domestic total to give it an approximate $431 million global total. Turtles and Alice though are looking pretty dismal.

Here’s what the entire top 10 chart looks like:

  • 01. The Conjuring 2 – $40.35 million (NE)
  • 02. Warcraft – $24.35 million (NE)
  • 03. Now You See Me 2 – $23.02 million (NE)
  • 04. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows – $14.80 million (LW: 1)
  • 05. X-Men: Apocalypse – $10 million (LW: 2)
  • 06. Me Before You – $9.21 million (LW: 3)
  • 07. Angry Birds – $6.70 million (LW: 5)
  • 08. Alice Through the Looking Glass – $5.54 million (LW: 4)
  • 09. Captain America: Civil War – $4.30 million (LW: 6)
  • 10. The Jungle Book – $2.72 Million (LW: 9)

This means that Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping has already dropped off the Top 10 chart after just one week. The Lonely Island comedy vehicle has been getting great reviews, but it appears that audiences don’t care to have their music idols made fun of by Andy Samberg.

(LW = Last Week, NE = New Entry)
