Damn ants! First they were in my sugar! Then they started raiding the cat food! Now they’re in my cinema? IS THERE NO END TO MY SUFFERING? Ant-Man kicked the Phase 2 weekend off for Marvel, with an opening US weekend of just over $58 million.
Disney projected around $60-$65 million on opening weekend for their smallest hero, so this total wasn’t too surprising exactly. Ant-Man was always going to be a tough sell, but it is by no means the weakest weekend for a Marvel movie. Thanks to some heat from Avengers: Age of Ultron, it’s still above the openings of The Incredible Hulk ($55 million) and a little bit over Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor.
Ant-Man will most likely be a sleeper success in the long-run, as word of mouth is currently quite high for the flick. Here’s how the rest of the box office did over the North American weekend:
- Ant-Man – $58 Million
- Minions – $50.2 Million
- Train-Wreck – $30.2 Million
- Inside Out – $11.6 Million
- Jurassic World – $11.4 Million
- Terminator Genisys – $5.4 Million
- Magic Mike XXL – $4.5 Million
- The Gallows – $4 Million
- Ted 2 – $2.7 Million
- Mr Holmes – $2.4 Million
What was the top-ranking film ten years ago? That would be Tim Burton’s Charlie And the Chocolate Factory, which opened up to over $56.1 million in 2005. Not bad for a movie that may have been about a sociopathic chocolate-dealer.
