This weekend past saw just two major releases, as filmgoers were treated to the debuts of the self proclaimed “most terrifying film you will ever experience” and a couple of old dinosaurs brought back to life through the power of Jesus Christ. Did I say Jesus Christ? I meant 3D. Studios are always professing it to be the second coming, so it’s easy to get them confused.
They joined last week’s top entries of some life real action figures and Cage-y cavemen but in the end there was only one winner, and if you went with “tree rape”, then you’d be 100% correct! Also, you have deep seated mental issues!
Despite some cinemagoers touting it as the most gruesome and stomach churning movie experience of the last couple of years, Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead still drew in enough viewers to debut at first place with a blood spattered $26 million haul. That may not be the biggest opening ever, but it was still enough to already cover the film’s $17 million price tag. And with the undead horror remake still to open in a number of international markets, where it will probably pick up a whole lot more Obamabucks, you can almost be assured that that talked about sequel is now a go.
Thanks to that (un)deadly debut, last week’s no.1 and 2, G.I. Joe: Retaliation and The Croods, dropped down to a tied second place with $21.1 million each. Flanking it’s way into fourth place while you got distracted up front, were the “clever girls” of Jurassic Park 3D. The 3D rerelease of Steven Spielberg’s 1993 blockbuster pulled in $18.2 million which is on par with other recent three dimensional rereleases.

Along with The Voynich Manuscript and the Wow Signal, how Tyler Perry’s movies still make money will probably go down as one of humanity’s greatest unsolved mysteries. I mean, he wasn’t even playing a sassy black grandmother in this one!
