Neighbors, everybody needs good neighbors! Proving that there was indeed something dark and funny brewing inside of Seth Rogen, his latest comedy has taken the box office by storm, notching up one hell of an opening weekend where superhero fatigue has clearly set in.
Neighbors took in $51.1 million during it’s North American weekend debut, one of the highest ever hauls for an R-rated comedy and just behind Ted’s 2012 $54.4 million opening. It’s also one of the best ever openings for a film starring Seth Rogen, topping his efforts from Green Hornet which opened up to $33.5 million in 2011. Opening at 1044 theatres, Mom’s Night Out made a moderate introduction of $4.2 million, although the combination of motherly love and faith didn’t help to propel this flick anywhere on Mother’s Day.
The only other new release over the weekend was Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return. Arriving in in 2575 screens around the US, it opened up to the lowest debut for an animated film in so many locations, barely banking $3.7 million. Here’s how everyone else did on the weekend.

Top ten departures this week include The Grand Budapest Hotel, God’s Not Dead and The Quiet Ones. The latest Wes Anderson film has had a solid run of ten weeks, notching up $142 million worldwide. That’s a massive improvement over the last Wes Anderson flick, Moonrise Kingdom, which currently has over $68 million in global tickets. As for The Quiet Ones, it’s been a complete bust as international tallies give the flick a four week run of just over $8 million.
