The US of A box office summer hasn’t exactly been on fire lately. Some films have done well, but overall, it’s been a week movie-going period, one of the worst in history. And this weekend was the slowest one in two years, with Guardians making use of the lull in cinema receipts to once again emerge as the top dog.

Despite a number one spot with only a meager $10.1 million take, Guardians Of The Galaxy has something to be proud of. This marks the fourth weekend that GOTG was in the number one spot, a feat that few films such as The Hunger Games, Avatar and The Dark Knight have managed to accomplish. GOTG is also now the highest grossing movie of all Augusts, and it looks like this flick is on track to surpass the North America totals of Iron Man 3. Here’s how everyone else did:

  • Guardians Of The Galaxy – $10.1 Million
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – $6.5 Million
  • If I Stay – $5.75 Million
  • Let’s Be Cops – $5.4 Million
  • The November Man – $4.2 Million
  • As Above/So Below – $3.72 Million
  • When The Game Stands Tall – $3.7 Million
  • The Giver – $3.5 Million
  • The Hundred Foot Journey – $3.2 Million
  • Lucy – $1.9 Million

So what’s happening locally at our box office? Well, according to charts, Lucy is the most popular film as of the August 29-31 weekend. It’s already raked in over R3.1 million on that weekend alone over 84 locations. Here’s a quick look at our top ten in the end of August charts, with the dollar figures converted to Randelas:

  • Lucy – R3.1 million
  • Tammy – R1.1 million
  • Guardians Of The Galaxy – R861 301
  • Step-Up: All in – R804 591
  • Sex Tape – R677 061
  • Die Spook Van Uniondale – R601 776
  • The Hundred-Foot Journey – R573 084
  • Think Like A Man Too – R551 639
  • The Expendables 3 – R514 757
  • Hercules – R502 167

Just think, with some of that cash, our local profits could be used to help feed thousands of starving Cape Town actors, or at least afford to clean their corpses off the street.
