It looks like Katniss Everdeen has something to be thankful for on this past Thanksgiving weekend. Despite a less than expected start to it’s US box office run the week before, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 managed to retain its top spot by pulling in a solid $51.6 million second week total.

On the newcomer front, Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur opened to what at first glance looks like a good $39.1 million, but this is actually the lowest opening for the acclaimed animation studio since 1998’s A Bug’s Life. Despite it’s jaw-dropping visuals, the film has not been pulling in the usual Pixar praise across the board. We will still have to see whether that translates to less than potent staying power.

Staying with the newcomers, Rocky revival Creed – coming off the back of absolutely stellar reviews – pulled in a great $31.4 million over the course of the three day weekend, which was enough to nab third spot. That is actually already the biggest opening in the Rocky franchise when adjusted for inflation, but seeing as the film actually opened early on last Wednesday already, it’s already notched up an impressive $42 million.

The rest of the chart is essentially just last week’s films shuffling down slightly as they settle for the scraps from the Thanksgiving table, but there was one giant turkey though. Despite the popular pairing of Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy, revisionist fantasy action-adventure Victor Frankenstein could only manage a lowly $2.35 million which only garnered it a 12th place. It seems audiences don’t care much for new spins on Mary Shelley’s classic novel. The Paul McGuigan directed flick was scripted by Max Landis (Chronicle) who doesn’t appear to be having a good 2015, as his American Ultra also flopped on release.

I predict the box office report 3 weeks from now will be quite interesting. Quite interesting indeed.

Looking forward to Creed. Pity it does not launch in Prestige this weekend. Now I am stuck watching Spectre. Pfffft
