Monday Box Office Report: Ninja Turtles cowabungle at the box office

TMNT2_Trailer2 (1)

The sequel to 2014’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles big screen remake may be subtitled Out of the Shadows, but it would seem that most Americans didn’t even want to get out of their homes to go see its debut this past weekend. In what was an extremely slow movie going weekend, TMNT 2 oozed its way to the top of a very underwhelming US top 10 with $35.25 million – which is just about half of what its predecessor earned on its debut.

And continuing the negative trend, in the second week of its US run, X-Men: Apocalypse experienced a way worse than expected 66% slump. If it keeps up its current pace, it’s expected to only finish its entire domestic run in the $160-165 million range. To put that into perspective, predecessor X-Men: Days of Future Past eclipsed that in just 10 days. To make it even more damning, Captain America: Civil War exceeded that in just its opening weekend.

Popstar2 (1)

X-Men still managed to hold on to the second spot though, but that was only thanks to nearly everybody else underperforming even worse. Alice Through the Looking Glass continued its flailing tumble down the box office rabbit hole, while new entry Andy Samberg and The Lonely Island’s comedy parody Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping unfortunately never even started. Despite some fairly good reviews, the film absolutely bombed in its debut, only managing to scrap up a measly $4.63 million. Popstar? More like Flopstar.

MeBeforeYou

You may have noticed in the previous paragraph though that I said NEARLY everyone underperformed, as there was one bright spot to be found on the charts this week. Flying in the fact of just so-so reviews, romantic drama Me Before You had a relatively exceptional debut with $18.2 million. Throw in a couple more millions it made on the foreign market and the movie has already made its $20 million budget back with plenty of change. As to the secret to its success when everything around it was tanking, Me Before You stars fan favourite actors Emilia Clarke and Sam Clafin, and is also based on a popular novel by Jojo Meyers, which more than likely boosted its appeal significantly.

Here’s what’s happening on the rest of the charts.

  • 01. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows – $35.25 million (NE)
  • 02. X-Men: Apocalypse – $22.32 million (LW: 2)
  • 03. Me Before You – $18.27 million (NE)
  • 04. Alice Through the Looking Glass – $10.69 million (LW: 2)
  • 05. Angry Birds – $9.75 million (LW: 3)
  • 06. Captain America: Civil War – $7.59 million (LW: 4)
  • 07. Bad Neighbours 2: Sorority Rising – $4.7 million (LW: 5)
  • 08. Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping – $4.63 million (NE)
  • 09. The Jungle Book – $4.24 Million (LW: 6)
  • 10. The Nice Guys – $3.52 million (LW: 7)

The biggest exit from the Top 10 this week is undoubtedly Disney’s Zootopia. The movie may have dropped to 14th place with just $790 000, but after 17 weeks in theatres, that was enough to have it cross the $1 billion mark globally. Zootopia is only the fourth animated movie of all time to cross this mark, after Disney’s Frozen ($1.27 billion), Universal/Illumination’s Minions ($1.15 billion) and Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 3 ($1.06 billion), and is only the second film of the year to also achieve this milestone after Captain America: Civil War ($1.13 billion). Clearly, Disney is swimming in Scrooge McDuck levels of money right now.

(LW = Last Week, NE = New Entry)

I saw it on Saturday. For a pre release event focused on gamers there were a ton of people who had no idea what Warcraft was, yet they were super keen to see it based purely on the trailers, so I think it will do alright.

Was pretty good though. Some moments irked me and it’s not quite 100% true to the lore, some of it was embellished for the the sake of effect, but all in all it was a really enjoyable movie. The CGI though… the worgs and Griffons… Just damn beautiful.

It’s not bad by any stretch of the word. But it’s not “great”. More along the lines of “pretty good”, if that makes sense 😀

Even as someone who enjoyed Warcraft I’m pretty sure I’ll still enjoy it. I’m not expecting the story to blow my mind, but I am expecting some good action.

I wouldn’t say worse looking, it’s actually pretty good to be honest. The facial expressions and Mo-Cap is excellent.

My advice? Go in expecting to see lots of spectacle CGI with a loose adaptions of the Warcraft lore and you will enjoy it immensely. Go in expecting a 1:1 adaption of the lore, mind blowing story telling and that general WoW feel and you gonna have a bad time.

Well, considering Warcraft is already watered down Warhammer (shotsfired) my expectations are not too high. 😀

Lol. Dude the pre release so was funny. Was literally Horde vs Alliance in terms of the crowd, and then the non gamers were like… WTF is happening here. Was half expecting someone to rock up with a dueling flag and start challenging people.

            Oh epic.
            That’s pretty sweet.
I honestly think I’ll enjoy the movie in the end.

So far the biggest complaint I’ve heard is from the die hard lore fans saying it isn’t 1:1. The guys who had no idea about the lore really enjoyed it for the Spectacle. The Story was a bit thin, but there is enough explained for them to understand though.(one of the families that went knows my girlfriend, so we asked them what they thought.) Another thing they said is some of the subtle things they didn’t get. Like the brief scene with a Murloc, or Khadgar polymorphing someone.

Ah, I see. It sounds like it’s a bit of a mixed bag, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing either.

This is what I’m afraid of, the person that digged himself within the WoW world will watch it and say pffff this isn’t true to the real Warcraft lore.

From the few reviews I have read , it sounds like the Baysplosion turtle movie , is more of an implosion, so I will skip the cinema release.

I’m not one for 3D movies, but this was a really awesome 3D movie. BUT, in saying that now that I’ve seen it, I would have been just as happy watching it at home on Blu Ray/DVD from my couch.

I fear Michael Bay is in need of a firmware upgrade. I’m still convinced that the guy isn’t actually a real human but rather a weird time-travelling cyborg (intend on destroying our culture).

Exactly, he’s taught us to either rely on non existent Turtles or Transformers when the world is in crisis. If those aren’t around we’re left with calling Shia LaBeouf

And there my Sim was, taking a shower when the shower pointlessly exploded. Through the rubble she saw Bob Pancakes, laughing maniacally and trying to twirl his moustache.
“DAMN YOU PANCAKES! I WILL KILL YOU!” she yelled.
Cue 90 minutes of running about going “Whoah! Whoah! Whoah!”, machine guns firing and buildings bursting into flames.
        YEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
