Chappie may have taken first place at the box office, but considering the overall results for the North American top ten, it was like winning a foot race against a coma patient. Neil Blomkamp’s third movie crashed and burned in terms of cash, taking in a mere $13.3 million on opening in the slowest weekend of 2015 so far.

In comparison, Chappie had a lower debut than both District 9 and Elysium – $37.4 million and $29.8 million respectively, opening up even lower than last month’s box office bomb Jupiter Ascending ($18.4 million). Poor reviews didn’t help stem the blood loss, and it looks like the District 9 connection couldn’t even save this film. Hopefully, Blomkamp’s Alien movie won’t be as negatively received. Here’s a look at the estimates for the top ten in the USA box office:

1251623 - Chappie

  • Chappie – $13.3 Million
  • Focus – $10 Million
  • The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – $8.6 Million
  • Kingsman: The Secret Service – $8.3 Million
  • The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water – $7 Million
  • Fifty Shades Of Grey – $5.6 Million
  • McFarland USA – $5.3 Million
  • The Lazarus Effect – $5.1 Million
  • The DUFF – $4.85 Million
  • Unfinished Business – $4.8 Million

Top ten departures this week include American Sniper, Still Alice and Hot Tub Time Machine 2. American Sniper is the big winner here, having made over $337 million in US ticket sales alone. Worldwide, the combined total sits at over $500 million currently.Still Alice made a moderate $14.7 million in the US off of a $5 million budget. Hot Tub Time Machine 2 however, crashed and burned as it made a meagre $11 million during its domestic run over three weeks. That’s nowhere close to the original film, which raked in $50.2 million from the US box office in 2010.
