It’s the calm before the storm. There weren’t too many new releases hitting the North American box office this weekend, thanks to the fact that Stark Industries was pulling into town this week. Iron Man 3 is already doing some massive business in the international markets, but it’s going to have to get past the juggernaut that is Michael Bay’s Pain and Gain film first, a movie which propelled itself into first place over the weekend.

Most likely while looking at itself in a mirror while lifting weights.

While Pain and Gain topped the box office, it wasn’t exactly a massive haul for the Michael Bay film starring a sociopathic Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Clocking in at the $20 million mark, the film will more than likely be surpassed by the American release of Iron Man 3.

On the other side of profitable, was The Big Wedding. The Robert Deniro and Diane Keaton rom-com caper flopped big time, totally missing the mark with its intended demographics and coming in with a poor total of just over $7 million. Here’s how everyone else did over the weekend:

  • Pain and Gain – $20 Million
  • Oblivion – $17.4 Million
  • 42 – $10.7 Million
  • The Big Wedding – $7.5 Million
  • The Croods – $6.6 Million
  • GI Joe Retaliation – $3.6 Million
  • Scary Movie 5 – $3.4 Million
  • Olympus Has Fallen – $2.7 Million
  • The Place Beyond The Pines – $2.6 Million
  • Jurrasic Park 3D – $2.3 Million

As for Iron Man 3? It’s a hit with audiences. The second armoured avenger second sequel played in 70% of its select markets, scoring $195 million in total. That’s ten million more than what The Avengers managed to do in its opening weekend, a fact that no doubt makes the house of mouse very happy right now. It’s also the biggest opening weekend ever in several countries for Iron Man 3, from Argentina to Hong Kong.
