Monday Box Office Report – Snikt snikt!

There was only one real new release this week, as a familiar mutant returned to the box office. And when it comes to box office totals, this hairy Canadian berserker is the best there is at what he does.

The Wolverine took the top spot with ease, slicing and dicing its way into the number one position with a $55 million haul. In comparison to previous X-films though, it is a lower opening weekend for the Canadian mutant. 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine took top spot back then with an $85 million opening, while this Wolverine flick manages to just about equal the opening record of 2011’s X-Men First Class.

Whether this opening result is due to the legacy of the really, really bad first spin-off Wolverine film or general audience apathy to big budget blockbusters is unknown, but on a critical level The Wolverine is still pulling in some fresh reviews.

• Grown Ups 2 – $11.5 Million

• Pacific Rim – $7.5 Million
• The Heat – $6.8 Million
• RIPD – $5.8 Million
• Fruitvale Station – $4.6 Million

Despicable Me 2 has held on well at the box office. The animated Dreamworks feature has been sitting in the top three now for four weeks, grossing over $660 million so far. Expect a LOT more sequels for that profitable franchise. World War Z and Monsters University departed the top ten this week. While World War Z lasted six weeks there and made over $473 million internationally, Monsters University eclipsed that with the same box office run that made it over $576 million.
