Monday Box Office Report – Take an identity thief right into the danger zone

Not even bad weather could stop a few new movies hitting the North Americas this past weekend. Identity thieves, highway danger zones and a ‘final’ film from Steven Soderbergh were among the new contenders. So who had a need for speed at the end of the day then?

It wasn’t Top Gun. Nope, not at all, as the late Tony Scott army recruitment video ended up in eleventh place at the end of the weekend. Instead, the new Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy comedy Identity Thief took number one, with a decent haul that most R-rated comedies don’t usually see. Expect this one to finish in the hundred million dollar territory.

On the other side though, Steven Soderbergh’s finale, Side Effects, had a  lukewarm reception, winding up with a $10 million haul in third place. Worse than previous entries such as Contagion and The Informant, it was still nonetheless a slightly more profitable entry than Haywire. Here’s the rest of the money-makers from the weekend;

  • Identity Thief – $36.5 Million
  • Warm Bodies – $11.5 Million
  • Side Effects – $10 Million
  • Silver Linings Playbook – $6.9 Million
  • Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters – $5.7 Million
  • Mama – $4.3 Million
  • Zero Dark Thirty – $4 Million
  • Argo – $2.5 Million
  • Django Unchained – $2.2 Million
  • Bullet to the head – $1.9 Million

As for departures this past weekend, Lincoln dropped out of the top ten after 14 weeks, with Parker doing the same, except with a far more embarrassing total run time of only three weeks for that Jason Statham starring film.
