Monday Box Office Report – The Croods take over Olympus

Plenty of new films hit the North American box office this weekend. Cage was back, action made a return and  something about ladies in bikinis going head to head with Tina Fey and Paul Rudd in a rom-com. That’s quite a packed schedule, and one that had plenty of jostling for the number one spot.

But like all things in life, adding Nicolas Cage to the formula provided for some bankable, and creepy, results. Here’s a look at how the big players did this past weekend.

The Croods was the surprise hit over the weekend, raking in over $44 million in cash. That’s a vast improvement over the underrated performance of Rise of the Guardians from last year, and more in line with previous Dreamworks projects such as Megamind and How To Train Your Dragon.

Olympus has Fallen also proved to be a surprise hit, and most likely the first real action movie of the year to make a decent dent, way ahead of other genre flicks such as Die Hard 5, The Last Stand and Bullet To The Head. Admission sorted out the top five of that list,a s the Tina Fey flick did some mediocre business, making this the worst debut for the 30 Rock actress, as well as for Paul Rudd in comparison to previous movies such as Wanderlust and My Idiot Brother. Here’s a look at how everyone else did.

  • The Croods – $44.7 Million
  • Olympus Has Fallen – $30.5 Million
  • Oz The Great And Powerful – $22 Million
  • The Call – $8.7 Million
  • Admission – $6.4 Million
  • Spring Breakers – $5 Million
  • The Incredible Burt Wonderstone – $4.2 Million
  • Jack The Giant Slayer – $2.9 Million
  • Identity Thief – $2.5 Million
  • Snitch – $1.9 Million

While the list saw the usual tumbles, it also saw the departure of Silver Linings Playbook from the top ten, which after 19 weeks, has cleaned up with a respectable haul of $216 million. Not bad for a movie about loonies.
