Muppets, divergents and some good ol’ faith? Who would win? Whow would reign supreme at the North American box office? Who would ah the hell with it. It was Divergent. Divergent freaking rocked the box office, capturing some of that young adult pie that so many other films had failed to do recently.

Opening at 3936 theaters, Divergent raked in over $56 million, easily grabbing the top spot. While not as successful as The Hunger Games, it’s a damn good start for the movie and will most likely already justify the plans that Summit Entertainment has for the sequels Insurget and Allegiant of if international figures keep up the pace.

Coming in at second place, The Muppets: Most Wanted opened up to a platry take of just $16.5 million. That’s down from the first film, which had an opening weekend haul of $29.2 million. Sad maniacal laugh, sad maniacal laugh. Opening up at just 780 venues, faith flick God’s not dead did some heavenly business over the weekend, making an easy $8.5 million. Compared to the Muppets who had a massive marketing campaign and 3194 theaters that they opened up in, that’s a pretty solid performance. Here’s how everyone else did:

  • Divergent – $56 Million
  • The Muppets: Most Wanted – $16.5 Million
  • Mr Peabody and Sherman – $11.7 Million
  • 300: Rise of an Empire – $8.6 Million
  • God’s not dead – $8.5 Million
  • Need for Speed – $7.7 Million
  • The Grand Budapest Hotel – $6.7 Million
  • Non-Stop – $6.3 Million
  • The Lego Movie – $4.1 Million
  • The Single Mom’s Club – $3.1 Million

Top ten departures this week included Son of God and Frozen. Easily one of the biggest animated films of recent history, Frozen took several years to produce and cost over $150 million to make. Still, it was all worth it for Disney, as the movie reigned supreme for 18 weeks over animated fare and earned back over $1.05 billion for the house of mouse. Money that will no doubt buy quite a bit of warm clothing for Mickey and pals.

  1. I really enjoyed reading Divergent and Insurgent, but I seriously doubt people are going to enjoy Allegiant. The third book was an epic fail and the makers of the first movie should’ve waited until it was released before making this a movie series. The third movie is bound to be a fail.

Why worry about the 3rd movie when you can make MOAR money NOW? Fuck Hollywood.
