Taking first place from Disney’s Big Hero 6, the long awaited sequel to Dumb and Dumber took the number one spot with a $38 million haul at the North American box office. That makes for the biggest opening ever for a movie directed by the Farrelly Brothers, and on par with similar movies such as Anchorman 2 ($39.5 million). The sequel has worked up good word of mouth so far, with the film embracing a story that saw its original characters return stupider than ever. When adjusted for inflation, it’s also a massive step up from the 1994 movie, which opened with a total of over $26 million.

The only other new release in the top ten was Beyond The Lights. Nobody cared. Here’s how everyone else did over the weekend:

  • Dumb and Dumber To – $38 milllion
  • Big Hero 6 – $36 milllion
  • Interstellar –  $29.1 milllion
  • Beyond the Lights – $6.5 milllion
  • Gone Girl – $4.6 milllion
  • St. Vincent – $4 milllion
  • Fury – $3.8 milllion
  • Nightcrawler – $3 milllion
  • Ouija – $3 milllion
  • Birdman – $2.4 milllion

Top ten departures this week include John Wick and The Book Of Life. Making a wicked total of over $53 million over a four week run, John Wick has proven to be a solid debut for directors David Leitch and  Chad Stahelski. It still needs to hit a few more territories, but expect this movie to appreciate in value once it hits home media. The Book Of Life was a more lavish animated film that celebrated life, death and the afterlife, notching up $84.1 million worldwide, off of a $50 million budget as it left the top ten.
