While Ender was able to play his Game without too much competition last week, this weekend past saw Thor: The Dark World finally thundering into US cinemas after it had already done some godly business abroad.

But did Thor experience a… Loki… (get it? Low key, Loki?) weekend at home allowing Ender’s Game to play out some more?

By Odin’s testes, that’s a definite “No!”. Thor: The Dark World took a massive $86.1 million domestic haul, the fourth largest opening of 2013, adding to it’s now $240.9 million international earnings to not only rule the Box Office this past weekend, but net itself a very successful $327 million total earnings to date in just 2 weeks.

And with everybody clamouring to see Chris Hemsworth flex his pecs, it left slim pickings for everybody else, with the next 3 spots all only pulling in the region of $11 million a piece, with just a couple hundred thousand dollars dividing them. Here’s what the full US top ten looked like:

  • Thor: The Dark World – $86.1 million
  • Bad Grandpa – $11.3 million
  • Free Birds – $11.18 million
  • Last Vegas – $11.1 million
  • Ender’s Game – $10.25 million
  • Gravity – $8.4 million
  • 12 Years a Slave – $6.6 million
  • Captain Phillips – $5.8 million
  • About Time – $5.1 million
  • Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 – $2.8 million

Seems like despite the fact that it’s getting good word of mouth (well, except from those people boycotting it), Ender’s Game‘s numbers are already spiralling down significantly, with it dropping down 4 places. And at this point, with it not even having made half its $110 million production budget back yet, it doesn’t spell good news for the Gavin Hood directed sci-fi adaptation.

This week we say goodbye to both Carrie and The Counsellor, with both having done pretty poor business despite the star studded casts and crew of each. The Chloe Moretz and Julianne Moore Carrie remake has only made $39 million on a $30 million budget, while Ridley Scott’s latest film, which has only made back $23 million of its $25 million budget, proves that not even being penned by an acclaimed writer like Cormac McCarthy or featuring the likes of Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt and Javier Bardem, will get people to see your movie when it’s apparently batshit insane.

  1. I saw the trailer for Ender’s Game before Thor on the weekend, it looked better than I expected. I fairly surprised it isn’t doing better.
