It may have been a long weekend for us, but everywhere else, it was business as usual. The North American box office was a crowded venue for new releases, with films ranging from sci-fi through to comedy popping up on the big screen.

Neil Blomkamp’s latest film, Elysium, took the top spot though in a sea of debuts and Olympian monsters. Here’s how everyone did over the last couple of days.

Elysium may have taken the top spot, but it did so with a smaller haul at the end of the weekend. Compared to similar genre films such as Pacific Rim and Oblivion, Elysium was a disappointing first place finish, not even beating out District 9 which debuted with $37 million in 2009.

But there’s a number of factors that could have influenced this, seeing as the film is still managing to get rave reviews currently. Audience fatigue, a crowded line-up of new films and a sci-fi film with an R-rating are just some of these reasons. Lets hope that Elysium can pick up some more cash in the long run. We’re the Millers on the other hand, took in a decent second place total of over $26 million, while Planes dived in for a third place finish to net Disney and Pixar some extra millions in a month that isn’t exactly overflowing with animated titles. Here’s how everyone else did:

  • Elysium – $30.4 Million
  • We’re the Millers – $26.5 Million
  • Planes – $22.5 Million
  • Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters – $14.6 Million
  • 2 Guns – $11.1 Million
  • The Smurfs 2 – $9.5 Million
  • The Wolverine – $8 Million
  • The Conjuring – $6.7 Million
  • Despicable Me 2 – $5.7 Million
  • Grown Ups 2 – $3.7 Million

2 Guns fell to fifth place over the weekend, but not before taking another $11.1 million at the box office. The Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg action comedy may be a solid film, but it looks like it may be one of the lowest-grossing movies that Washington has starred in for several years now. Departing the top ten last week was The Heat, Turbo and RED 2. Currently sitting at number 12 on the list, Turbo hasn’t exactly been a winner, as after four weeks the film has only managed to make $135.7 million on the global stage.

  1. I hate that we’re behind on the releases so often. Elysium only starts here in 3 weeks, Red 2 in more than 40 days. It’s kinda ridiculous. Being behind by a week is still okay, I can deal with that, but why do we sometimes have to wait so long for some of the movies?
