Will Smith usually equals an easy box office. But not always, as his latest flick Focus didn’t exactly make a ton of bank at the North American box office on a slow weekend. Focus ranks on the lower spectrum of Will Smith movies, barely ahead of Seven Pounds $14.9 million opening, although that film still made over $70 million. And that’s a sum that Focus may have trouble matching, if it loses steam quickly. There’s another factor at play here: Smith’s rather lacklustre output as of late. With MIB 3 and After Earth being his only other films that he has starred in, in the last six years, it’s difficult to maintain brand awareness at this rate.

Here’s a look at the rest of the weekend estimates from the US box office:

kingsman0005

  • Focus – $19.1 Million
  • Kingsman: The Secret Service – $11.7 Million
  • The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water – $11.2 Million
  • Fifty Shades Of Grey – $10.9 Million
  • The Lazarus Effect – $10.6 Million
  • McFarland, USA – $7.79 Million
  • American Sniper – $7.7 Million
  • The DUFF – $7.1 Million
  • Still Alice – $2.6 Million
  • Hot Tub Time Machine 2 – $2.4 Million

Top ten departures this week include Paddington, Jupiter Ascending and The Imitation Game. The marmalade-loving bear went over a treat at the box office, rounding off a seven-week run in the US with an international haul of over $230 million, which smells like sequel. Jupiter Ascending may have been in stasis for too long, as the movie never even made back its budget and lasted a mere four weeks and only banking $118.1 million worldwide. Finally, Oscar contender The Imitation Game may have been crap at charades, but it still managed to bank over $180 million and plenty of accolades.
