Mortal Kombat will be R-rated and feature gruesome fatalities when it hits the big screen in 2021

Fatality

Imagine Mortal Kombat without violence. That’d be the equivalent of a Steven Seagal movie without slaps, Nascar without turning left or a Batman movie that doesn’t feature Bruce Wayne’s parents being gunned down in an alleyway and seeing Martha Wayne’s pearl necklace break in EXTRA-dramatic slow-motion style. Martha? MARTHA?! WHY DID YOU SAY THAT NAME?

Anyway, it’s not that you can’t have a Mortal Kombat movie without violence, as the 1995 adaptation proved that the meat of the story can function just fine if you disguise the gore with a little of the ol’ PG-13 film trickery. At the same time, that violence is a character within Mortal Kombat, a layer of style that no other video game on the planet can lay claim to.

Fans hunger to see faces ripped off, opponents beaten bloody with their own limbs and an entire slaughterhouse of finishers that make the Hostel series look like an episode of the Care Bears in comparison. That’s the true identity of Mortal Kombat, and it’s something that the upcoming film knows all too well as the latest cinematic adaptation is looking to rip the big screen a new one and find an R-rating within.

Writer for Mortal Kombat, Greg Russo, took to Twitter to allay any fears that the film would be shooting for a family-friendly age rating, confirming that not only would the movie have violence a’plenty but that it would earn its R-rating ambition with the proper debut of fatalities on the big screen:

As a person who gets his sick kicks by rooting for Colonel William Tavington in the 2000 Mel Gibson movie The Patriot, this pleases me greatly. Oh yes indeed. Production is also ramping up nicely on Mortal Kombat, as this week also saw the first bit of casting done. Say hello to your new Sub-Zero, as The Raid’s Joe Taslim is getting ready to suit up in some Lin Kuei ninja gear.

Sub-Zero

Mortal Kombat will hit screens on March 5, 2021. The waiting to see big budget violence is the worst fatality that I could possibly imagine.

DEFINITELY NOT cuck-filled soy boys like you! Clearly this is targetted at real men and fans of Mortal Kombat. I’m definitely watching this. If they can pull this off and emulate Deadpool, then this will put Mortal Kombat back on the map.

This could be damn awesome. I really hope they pull it off. This franchise needs an epic movie to make up for Mortal Kombat XI being a bit of a limp dick. What’s up with all the chicks? Why do they all look like blokes? I mean this is the same engine that made all the ladies in the DCU look freaking awesome in Injustice 2. How could they get it so wrong in Mortal Kombat XI? Jesus!!
