Here’s what’s on at the cinemas to keep you entertained over the Easter weekend, that is if you’re not in a sugar coma from all the chocolate!

  • Furious 7

Furious 7

Continuing the global exploits in the unstoppable franchise built on speed, Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson lead the returning cast of Fast & Furious 7. James Wan directs this chapter of the hugely successful series that also welcomes back favorites Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Elsa Pataky and Lucas Black. They are joined by international action stars new to the franchise including Jason Statham, Djimon Hounsou, Tony Jaa, Ronda Rousey and Kurt Russell.

I haven’t kept up with The Fast and the Furious franchise, but long-time fans are in for a real treat. With crazy action, cheesy one-liners, self-aware in-jokes, and an incredibly poignant send off for Paul Walker, Furious 7 has been called the best in the series. Kervyn was certainly impressed, giving it 4/5 stars and calling it the perfect high-note to end the series. Not that it is the end of the franchise, but it will definitely be difficult to top.

  • Cinderella

cinderella

Cate Blanchett stars in this new vision of the Cinderella tale from director Kenneth Branagh and the screenwriting team of Chris Weitz and Aline Brosh McKenna for Disney Pictures.

As enchanting and magical as the original, this updated version of Cinderella remains faithful to the classic Disney story, treating the source material with a lot of respect, but still manages to adapt enough for modern times to stay fresh. Heartfelt and well-acted, Cinderella is definitely impressing critics, with 85% on Rotten Tomatoes.

  • Inherent Vice (Cinema Nouveau)

INHERENT VICE

When private eye Doc Sportello’s ex-old lady suddenly out of nowhere shows up with a story about her current billionaire land developer boyfriend whom she just happens to be in love with, and a plot by his wife and her boyfriend to kidnap that billionaire and throw him in a looney bin…well, easy for her to say. It’s the tail end of the psychedelic `60s and paranoia is running the day and Doc knows that “love” is another of those words going around at the moment, like “trip” or “groovy,” that’s being way too overused – except this one usually leads to trouble.

Based on a novel by Thomas Pynchon, Inherent Vice is part psychedelic-romp, part film-noir, all crazy and wild and never straightforward. Some critics haven’t been impressed, calling it deliberately confusing and unfunny, but for the most part Inherent Vice has captured their imaginations, scoring 72% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Willemien’s life gets turned upside down the day she takes home the eccentric and bow tie wearing Vossie. Set in the picturesque town of Stellenbosch, the story unfolds with Vossie experiencing many awkward moments as he finds himself in a home worlds apart from his own.

Oh yay, another South African fish-out-of-water film. I’m sure at some stage we’ll broaden our horizons, but in the meantime we’re stuck with movies “in the tradition of great romantic comedies like ‘Meet the Parents’ and ‘Meet the Fokkers’” which I’m not entirely sure is a good thing. Expect many a misunderstanding for the sake of comedy and a completely predictable ending. But hey, at least the scenery should be pretty.
