There’s something for everyone with this week’s new releases. You can drop the kids off to watch The Secret Life of Pets (although, you’ll probably enjoy it as well) while you take in the intense action-drama of Deepwater Horizon.

  • The Secret Life of Pets

    Age restriction: PG V

Taking place in a Manhattan apartment building, Max’s life as a favorite pet is turned upside down, when his owner brings home a sloppy mongrel named Duke. They have to put their quarrels behind, when they find out that an adorable white bunny named Snowball is building an army of abandoned pets determined to take revenge on all happy-owned pets and their owners.

Thank goodness Illuminations Entertainment has moved on from Minions. Granted, they were successful, but we still get stupid minion memes thanks to that one crazy drunk aunt on Facebook. Luckily, The Secret Life of Pets is super charming and adorable and almost enough to make you forget those yellow jellybeans. While it doesn’t quite have the same story-telling depth of a Pixar movie, and might follow a pretty paint-by-numbers plot, it’s bright and funny and full of heart. Kids are going to love it, and it’s good enough that parents won’t suffer at the same time.

  • Deepwater Horizon

    Age restriction: 13 L V

On April 20th, 2010, the world’s largest man-made disaster occurred on the Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico. This film honors the brave men and women whose heroism would save many on board, and change everyone’s lives forever.

Ironically rather shallow on the details, Deepwater Horizon doesn’t delve too far into the real-life drama and fallout of the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history. But it more than makes up for this with a super tense build up and astonishing action sequences that will (forgive the pun) completely blow you away. The cast all rise to the occasion with their brave, emotive performances, which raises this movie above mere Hollywood action film to an intense character drama.

  • Sy Klink Soos Lente

    Age restriction: 10–12PG L

Ben, a mechanic at a Johannesburg car dealership, and Linda, a beautiful, smart redhead, cross paths one night. He immediately recognises her as his boss’s daughter, although she has no idea who he is. They’re immediately attracted to each other, and, in a frantic and uncertain effort to disguise his identity, Ben lies to Linda and claims to be in a band. When their love blossoms unexpectedly and he decides that he wants to live up to his lie, he starts a band with a few fellow employees, and they enroll for a battle-of-the-bands competition. What if musical talent is not in him? What will happen if Linda finds out that he lied to her?

I don’t think there are going to be any surprises in this story, it’s a fairly middle-of-the-road rom-com. Still, despite it looking super sappy, and telegraphing the third-act complication from the get-go, Sy Klink Soos Lente actually looks kind of… cute. And I never thought I’d say that.

  • M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story

    Age restriction: TBA

The untold story of Dhoni’s journey from ticket collector to trophy collector – the world-cup-winning captain of the Indian Cricket Team.

Well, it can’t exactly be the untold story, now that you’ve told it, right? I don’t know how these things work. I also don’t know anything about M.S. Dhoni, or his rise to fame as the most successful Captain in Indian Cricket history. But, as with all underdog sports tales, M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story is inspirational and full of charisma, led by a stellar performance from Bollywood powerhouse Sushant Singh Rajput as the captain himself.

  • Labyrinth of Lies

    Age restriction: 13 V

In LABYRINTH OF LIES, the economic miracle is changing the life of Germans in post-war Germany 20 years later. Most of them are sick of the war and prefer to push their guilt to the back of their mind. When a journalist (André Szymanski) identifies a teacher in the playground as a former guard from Auschwitz, no one wants to take notice. But a young prosecutor (Alexander Fehling) takes on the case and can’t even be stopped by his boss. During his research he realizes that some Germans claim that they never heard the expression “Auschwitz,” while others try to forget about it. As the resolute prosecutor doesn’t give up, the Attorney General Fritz Bauer (Gert Voss) retains him to take charge of the investigations. Struggling with an overload of information, the young attorney blunders into a labyrinth of guilt and lies where he almost gets lost.

Powerful, moving and super artsy, Labyrinth of Lies blends mostly fact and a bit of fiction into a fascinating and commanding history lesson. It’s incredibly thought-provoking, unflinchingly righteous and told at a fast enough pace that the heavy subject matter never feels onerous.

Rotten Tomatoes: 81%
Metacritic: 62
