Well, technically The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 came out yesterday, but it’s still on the list!

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1

Katniss Everdeen is in District 13 after she shatters the games forever. Under the leadership of President Coin and on the advice of her trusted friends, Katniss spreads her wings as she fights to save Peeta and a nation moved by her courage.

If you read Kervyn’s review yesterday, then you’ll know that Mockingjay – Part 1 departs from the formula of the previous two. There’s a lot less action and a lot more drama, as the movie focuses on the characters’ emotions instead of their circumstances. This definitely isn’t a bad thing, but it is an abrupt change of pace for the franchise and you’ll still be left feeling like you’ve only watched half a movie while you wait for Part 2.

No Good Deed

Terri (Taraji P. Henson), a devoted wife and mother of two, lives an ideal life that takes a dramatic turn when her home and children are threatened by Colin (Idris Elba), a charming stranger who smooth-talks his way into her house, claiming car trouble. The unexpected invitation leaves her and her family terrorized and fighting for survival.

Critics have almost universally panned No Good Deed for being dull and lifeless with a final twist that could be seen coming from about five minutes in. Only 10% on Rotten Tomatoes? Oh Idris Elba, I expected better from you.

The Grand Seduction

A small fishing village must procure a local doctor to secure a lucrative business contract. When unlikely candidate and big city doctor Paul Lewis (Taylor Kitsch) lands in their lap for a trial residence, the townsfolk rally together to charm him into staying. As the doctor’s time in the village winds to a close, acting mayor Murray French (Brendan Gleeson) has no choice but to pull out all the stops and begin The Grand Seduction.

While it might be a typical (if overly-long and occasionally sappy) fish-out-of-water tale, The Grand Seduction is charming enough to garner 60% on Rotten Tomatoes.

God Help the Girl (limited release)

Three young musicians meet at a crossroads in their creative and personal lives in Glasgow, Scotland in this musical drama film written and directed by Stuart Murdoch of the band Belle and Sebastian. Their inter-connections and relationships with those around them make for a dreamy summer of creative and emotional discovery.

God Help the Girl has been described as a super adorably charmingly twee indie musical, with catchy tunes and syrupy sweet everything else. If any of the adjectives used to describe it so far have made you gag, best stay away. And yes, the cast will be bursting out into song-and-dance routines. You have been warned.
