Action! Adventure! Cinematic explosions! Whatever floats your boat, this week’s new releases should keep you on the edge of your seat, or rolling on the floor laughing.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout

Age Restriction: 13 L V

The best intentions often come back to haunt you. Mission: Impossible – Fallout finds Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team (Alec Baldwin, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames) along with some familiar allies (Rebecca Ferguson, Michelle Monaghan) in a race against time after a mission gone wrong. Henry Cavill, Angela Bassett, and Vanessa Kirby also join the dynamic cast with filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie returning to the helm.

I’m probably the only one in the team that didn’t enjoy the latest Mission: Impossible movie. I spent the entire runtime with a look of utter incredulity on my face. Then again, I haven’t wached any since the first one, which probably didn’t help. The most Mission Impossibley of all the Mission Impossible films, Fallout is an overload of the franchise’s trademark extreme action scenes, implausible scenarios and incoherent plot. It’s not going to be the film to convert newcomers to the franchise, it certainly didn’t for me, but those that love the daring exploits of Ethan Hunt and Co. might find Fallout to be the best Mission Impossible yet.

Teen Titans Go! To The Movies

Age Restriction: PG V

It seems to the Teens that all the major superheroes out there are starring in their own movies everyone but the Teen Titans, that is! De facto leader Robin is determined to remedy the situation, and be seen as a star instead of a sidekick. If only they could get the hottest Hollywood film director to notice them. With a few madcap ideas and a song in their heart, the Teen Titans head to Tinsel Town, certain to pull off their dream. But when the group is radically misdirected by a seriously super villain and his maniacal plan to take over the Earth, things really go awry. The team finds their friendship and their fighting spirit failing, putting the very fate of the Teen Titans themselves on the line!

As silly and humorous as the original cartoon, Teen Titans Go! To The Movies is infectiously wacky and fun. Balancing the right amount of absurd gags that keep kids rolling in the aisles with the acknowledging nods to the adults in the audience, Teen Titans Go! is a perfect spoof of the superhero genre in today’s comic book movie overload.

Adrift

Age Restriction: 13 V

Adrift is based on the inspiring true story of two sailors who set out to journey across the ocean from Tahiti to San Diego. Tami Oldham (Shailene Woodley) and Richard Sharp (Sam Claflin) couldn’t anticipate they would be sailing directly into one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history. In the aftermath of the storm, Tami awakens to find Richard badly injured and their boat in ruins. With no hope for rescue, Tami must find the strength and determination to save herself and the only man she has ever loved.

Part survival drama, part love story, Adrift manages to stay afloat mostly thanks to Shailene Woodley’s heavy, emotional performance. The inspiring true story combined with a courageous and tenacious lead character elevate Adrift where it may otherwise have sunk with its clichéd story beats.
