This week’s new releases are all about the nostalgia. Ghosbusters recalls a classic, while Jason Bourne recalls basically all the other Bourne movies in one go.

  • Ghostbusters: Answer the Call

Thirty years after the beloved original franchise took the world by storm, director Paul Feig brings his fresh take to the supernatural comedy, joined by some of the funniest actors working today–Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth. This summer, they’re here to save the world!

Ghostbusters: Answer the Call is great. Really! It might not reach the same lofty cult status heights as the original, but haters be damned, it’s still a lot of fun. The four leads are brilliant, the laughs are plentiful, and even though the story is going to feel like it’s a bit too much on the familiar side, you’re still going to have a good time.

  • Jason Bourne

Matt Damon returns to his most iconic role in Jason Bourne which finds the CIA’s most lethal former operative drawn out of the shadows.

If you’ve seen one Bourne movie, you’ve seen them all by now. All the latest in this franchise does is repeat other action movies that have done it bigger and better before, and that’s including its own predecessors. It’s still relatively entertaining and decently watchable, just don’t expect it to break any new grounds.

  • Captain Fantastic

Deep in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, isolated from society, a devoted father (Viggo Mortensen) dedicates his life to transforming his six young children into extraordinary adults. But when a tragedy strikes the family, they are forced to leave this self-created paradise and begin a journey into the outside world that challenges his idea of what it means to be a parent and brings into question everything he’s taught them.

Lead by a towering performance by Viggo Mortensen, Captain Fantastic is an earnest, warm-hearted and touching movie with great chemistry and some unexpected turns. It might make you cry, it will make you laugh, and even with a messy third act it’s sure to leave you satisfied.

Rotten Tomatoes: 77%
Metacritic: 72

  • Wonder Boy for President

Wonder Boy for President tells a story of Wonder Boy, a charismatic and authoritative young man from the Eastern Cape, who is coerced into running for president by two dubious and corrupt characters. Their aim is to mould him into a great politician and manufacture his down-fall at the right time, for the right price. It is a political satire that delves into political dynamics and challenges that arise.

A stealthily filmed, low-budget satire about South African politics, Wonder Boy for President delivers sharply on the mock part of mockumentary. With its audacious, hilarious, and mostly ad-libbed commentary, it’s perfectly timed for our upcoming elections.
