11.22.63

11.22.63 – or more descriptively, the 22 November 1963 – lives on in American history as the day that President John F Kennedy was assassinated, and it is one of those events that had so much controversy and conspiracy theories around it that Hollywood has never lost its fascination with it. And it’s about to get another chance to be thrust into the minds of Americans with a new adaptation of a Stephen King novel of the same name by Hulu, who is converting it into an 8 part TV series.

The series is set to be a thriller in which high school English teacher Jake Epping travels back in time to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy — but his mission is threatened by Lee Harvey Oswald, falling in love and the past itself, which doesn’t want to be changed. Sounds like an intriguing premise. And now there’s a brand new full trailer to show it all off!

Check it out below.

Hulu is not taking chances with this new series, getting JJ Abrams (who seems to be pretty much the go-to man if you want to create a hit franchise) and his production company Bad Robot to head up the adaption. With a string of incredible TV series such as Lost and Heroes already produced by Abrams’ production team, they certainly have the know-how and talent to turn this into a potentially riveting series.

Speaking to the Television Critics Association, Abrams reported:

:This is a book that I had loved long before Stephen King reached out and asked if I’d be interested in getting involved to produce. We did go out to a number of places and had some offers, but the enthusiasm [at Hulu] was clear and it matched ours.:

Making this series even more exciting is that they have a major star on-board to play the lead role in James Franco (who will play the title role of Jake Epping). Franco had previously announced his love for the book in a post at Vice, way before he was even considered for the lead role.

“I wanted the rights to the book, but J. J. Abrams has them and is adapting the novel into an online miniseries. I love J. J. Abrams as much as the next person (though I bet there are some pretty ardent Lost fans that I’ll never match in fervor), but come on. That guy gets to do everything.”

Franco was surprised when JJ Abrams reached out to him about a starring role in the series and was keen to jump in straight away.

While Abrams is acting as one of several executive producers, alongside Stephen King himself, much of the adaptation has actually fallen to executive producer Bridget Carpenter (Parenthood, Friday Night Lights), who has the challenging task of not just adapting a much loved novel by a legendary author, but also in keeping the topic of JFK’s assassination fresh and authentic. Speaking of these challenges Abrams told Hollywood Reporter:

“It wasn’t in any way easy, and the work that [Bridget] did was remarkable, in some cases introducing new characters or in some cases cutting existing ones. We were very lucky to find Bridget and have her not just wrangle it but tell this beautiful Stephen King tale.”

11.22.63 premieres on Feb 15 (which happens to be President’s day in the US) on Hulu. The first 2 hours will be directed by Oscar-winning director Kevin MacDonald (Last King of Scotland, State of Play) and will also be starring Chris Cooper, Josh Duhamel, T.R. Knight, Cherry Jones, Sarah Gadon, Lucy Fry, George MacKay and Daniel Webber.
