New Line is looking to fast-track development on Y: THE LAST MAN

Ever wondered what it would be like to be the last man on Earth? Well, if it’s anything like the future represented in the tale from Brian K Vaughn and Pia Guerra, I’d be ready to slip a noose on my neck if it was me in that position.

The tale of a lone escape artist and his pet helper monkey has long been in the cross-hairs of Hollywood, as they’ve attempted to adapt the story multiple times for the big screen, and getting side-tracked each and every time. Except now, New Line may finally be ready to get the ball rolling.

Jericho writers Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia recently turned in a new script for the project, with New Line putting the film back on the production slate, as they’re giving it a top priority, as well as starting a hunt to find some directors.

It also sounds like the duo have a new take on the film, as DJ Caruso, who was in charge of developing it six years ago, envisioned a trilogy alongside director Louis Letterier, due to the sheer size of the story.

So what direction could this take have on the somewhat depressing story from Y: The last man? You have to remember, this isn’t exactly a film that could appeal to the masses, as the apocalyptic state that the world finds itself in when any species with a Y chromosome dies, is a despairing tale of survival, greed and misplaced vengeance, something that not even the presence of a monkey can lighten up.

And as interesting as it could be to see a film that stays on a clear and linear path towards an inevitable conclusion could be, there’s going to be quite a bit of subtext left out along the way.

As much as I would dig to see Y: The last man on the big screen, I’ve always felt that this was a project that would be perfectly suited for television, much like The Walking Dead, only if it was actually interesting.
