While it certainly had its fans, I kind of wished that I had been neuralyzed after watching the last Men In Black movie. Sure it’s not a wholeheartedly horrible movie – far from it, in fact – as my biggest problem with the movie though was a very holey script, while star Will Smith delivered the funny charismatic goods like always. But it looks like the franchise is going to forgo that Fresh Prince touch in the future. And yes, it does have a future.

Chatting with THR, the producing duo of Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald revealed that Sony is planning to revive the MIB franchise with another trilogy, but that Smith will “most likely” be absent.

THR: You produced Men in Black. Has there been talk of reviving that franchise with the new Sony regime?

PARKES: “We’re in the middle of it. It’s very active.”

THR: Is Will Smith going to be part of it?

PARKES: “Most likely no.”

MACDONALD: “It will be reinvented as a trilogy.”

If you recall, the last we heard, Sony had some really weird plans for a crossover between MIB and their uber-successful Jump Street revival. No, seriously. It’s unclear if this new trilogy that Parkes and MacDonald are referring to is somehow related to that crazy idea, but it certainly doesn’t sound that way.

The Men In Black universe with it’s organization of agents of course lends itself quite well to bringing in a brand new cast for a totally unrelated adventure. And of course there’s the fact that the three movies have made a combined $1.65 billion off a combined budget of just $445 million, so this is definitely a property that Sony would just want to fade away into obscurity. Cast some rising young stars, replaced series director Barry Sonnenfeld with some other big draw like Guardians of the Galaxy’s James Gunn and get Smith and Tommy Lee Jones (who has stated his desire to return) to cameo as the senior guys, and this may just work out well.
