It was bound to happen eventually and in fact I’m surprised it’s taken this long, but we have news of a new Michael Jackson film in the work. And as we all know, biopics are hot property in Hollywood – except only, this is not a biopic. The Guardian reports that a new movie is in the work around the events of 9/11 and focused on a concert that he had around the time.

The outline of the film is as follows:

Several days before the attack, Michael Jackson was playing a concert at Madison Square Garden and he’d invited Elizabeth Taylor and Marlon Brando to join him. Then, after the towers fell and air-traffic to and from New York was cancelled, the trio rented a car and attempted to drive themselves back to California, getting as far as Ohio, or so the story goes.

Now, no one knows for certain whether any of this actually happened, but they’re making a movie about it anyway. And to be honest it sounds a little boring and light on substance, but the news gets better. Or weirder. They also report that Joseph Fiennes is in line to play the king of pop himself – wait, what?!

Yes, you read that correctly, Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare in Love, American Horror Story) is in line to play Michael Jackson. Now, no doubt Joseph is a talented actor, but this is a bit of a bizarre pairing and will either go hopelessly wrong or some how prove to be a masterful stroke of acting genius by the man himself. As for the singing and dancing, the verdict is out on the man’s talent. The film is set to be a dramedy, which is essentially a dramatic comedy, so expect it to not take itself too seriously, so perhaps the move does make sense and they are looking to just have fun with the movie rather than try and get into serious details of the character.

The film is also set to star Stockard Channing as Elizabeth Taylor, and Brian Cox as Marlon Brando (I get those two connections). Fiennes himself has described the script as “a challenge, but it’s a fun, lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek road trip of what celebrity of that kind is like. But also it’s rather beautiful and poignant about their relationships.”

It’s a little early for April fools rumours to start doing the rounds, but this certainly sounds like one. I guess we are going to have to treat it seriously for now. We know no further details on this film, with no directors attached to it, though we will likely here about soon if they are serious. What do you think – could this actually work and would it be something you would be interested in seeing?
