This might be a day late, but honestly, no one was going to be reading this when the last public holiday until mid-June beckoned. Here’s everything that will be hitting Netflix screens over the next month.

Netflix Original Series

Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments: Season 3

On her birthday, Clary Fray discovers a surprise concerning her life. The teenager is not who she thinks she is — she comes from a long line of human-angel hybrids, called Shadowhunters, who hunt demons. After her mother is kidnapped, Clary is thrust into the world of demon-hunting.

Fan favourite young adult drama Shadowhunters premieres its third season on Netflix this month, with new episodes releasing weekly. Episode 1 launches on May 2, with new episodes out on every Wednesday.

Dear White People: Volume 2

Romantic dilemmas, a social media troll and big changes at Armstrong-Parker House push Sam, Lionel and friends to the breaking point.

The follow up to 2017’s highly acclaimed Volume 1, Dear White People: Volume 2 hopes to be as sharp, timely and provocative as its predecessor.

Launches 4 May, 2018.

The Rain: Season 1

After a brutal virus wipes out most of the population, two young siblings embark on a perilous search for safety. A Scandinavian thriller series.

A thrilling post-apocalyptic sci-fi horror, sitting down to watch The Rain is like watching a horror movie marathon, but one you’ll be reluctant to stop.

The Toys That Made Us: Season 2    

The new season features Star Trek, Transformers, LEGO and Hello Kitty.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Season 4

Kimmy gets a job at a tech startup, Titus pretends to have a TV show to impress Mikey, and Jacqueline starts a talent agency.

The weird and hilarious journey of the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt returns for its fourth season, as the titular Kimmy continues to adjust to her new life in New York.

Launches 30 May, 2018.

Original Films

Manhunt

A Chinese pharmaceutical lawyer framed for a vile crime teams up with a sharp-witted Japanese detective to stop a dangerous corporate plot.

Not to be confused with Manhunt: Unabomber, this Manhunt is the latest John Woo film, complete with his signature stylish gunplay and backdrop of white doves.

Launches 4 May, 2018.

Cargo

Stranded in rural Australia in the aftermath of a violent pandemic, an infected father desperately seeks a new home for his infant child, and a means to protect her from his own changing nature.

Based on the 2013 short film of the same name (which you can watch here), the expanded version of Cargo stars Martin Freeman and is produced by the genius minds behind The Babadook.

Launches 18 May, 2018.

Catching Feelings

A Johannesburg professor and his journalist wife find their relationship tested in new ways when a famous, hard-partying writer enters their lives.

Having been in our cinemas a scant two months ago, local film Catching Feelings now gets its international distribution thanks to Netflix.

Original Documentaries

End Game

Directed by Academy Award winning filmmakers Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, End Game is an intimate vérité style documentary short that follows visionary medical practitioners who are working on the cutting edge of life and death — and dedicated to changing our thinking about both.

Co-directed by filmmakers Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (both of Howl, Lovelace, The Times of Harvey Milk, The Celluloid Closet, Paragraph 175), End Game first premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Launches 4 May, 2018.

Evil Genius: the True Story of America’s Most Diabolical Bank Heist

This docuseries investigates the true story of a pizza delivery man who robbed a bank, then was killed by a bomb fastened around his neck.

One of the most bizarre, and grisly, crimes from recent memory is the Infamous Pizza Bomber from 2003, which is the subject of this Netflix original documentary.

New Series Available

After picking through the various new series coming to Netflix this month, the only real standouts are the additions in terms of the DC TV shows, with new(ish) seasons of three favourites starting on the 1st.

  • The Flash: Season 3 launches 5 May, 2018
  • DC’s Legends of Tomorrow: Season 2 launches 13 May, 2018

New Films Available

The new films coming to Netflix this month are mostly for the kids, so if you’re sick of watching Tangled or Frozen for the hundredth time, these are the films that are about to be on repeat for the children of the house.
