In case you hadn’t heard, as part of Universal’s shared monster movie universe, there’s a new reboot of The Mummy on the way. And this time she’s an actual mummy… mommy… well, she could be. The point I’m clumsily trying to make is that for the first time Hollywood’s mummy is a she. More specifically Sofia Boutella, who we last saw pulling off the best Oscar Pistorius cosplay ever in Kingsman and will soon be seen under a whole lot of alien make-up in Star Trek Beyond.

Thus far we haven’t seen anything of Boutella’s undead creature though, as the only pics released have been related to star Tom Cruise’s special forces action hero Tyler Colt (yes, this movie takes place in modern times as opposed to all the other takes over the years, and yes that is honestly his character’s name). However over the weekend some new set pics popped up courtesy of Just Jared, and we can finally get a look at Boutella’s creature, which still boasts the classic pale raggedy look, but with a couple of new touches. The scene they’re filming also gives us a hint at her abilities as she appears to control a crowd of people.

Sorry, Arnold Vosloo, but I actually really like Boutella’s look here. And I’m saying that as just about the biggest fan of Stephen Sommers’ 1999 version as you can find. Now we just need to see some actual footage from this movie now. I was hoping that would happen at next week’s Comic-Con, but while the movie has been shooting for a while now, with the amount of post-production work that will be needed that’s going to be a tough ask.

The Mummy is directed by Alex Kurtzman off a script by Jon Spaihts, and also stars Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance and Russell Crowe, with the latter having recently been confirmed as playing Dr Jekyl/Mr Hyde and being setup for a possible solo movie of his own in this universe. The Mummy is currently scheduled for release on June 9, 2017.
