New Star Wars TV series REBELS debuts in 2014

I’ve been pretty bummed since Disney acquired Star Wars and decided to cancel the Clone Wars TV series. To me, it was Star Wars at the purest level, capturing the magic of that film franchise on a weekly level, highlighting several characters along the way and giving them a chance to shine.

That show is pretty much finished now, with scant details as to how the fate of several characters would be resolved. But fans won’t have to wait too long for Star Wars to return to TV, as a new show by the name of Rebels will be hitting TV screens far, far away next year.

Rebels will be set in the two decade time frame between Episodes III and IV, in which  “the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a fledgling rebellion against the Empire is taking shape”, according to the Disney press release via Slash Film. Further information happens to be “a closely guarded secret at this point”, so don’t expect anything more for the remainder of the year. One positive aspect of this new show though, is that Clone Wars supervising director Dave Filoni will be back as executive producer alongside Greg “Young Justice” Weisman who will be producing as well.

That’s a good move. It means that Rebels should at least have some guidance in the form of the experienced Filoni, while Weisman himself helped shape the tales of a junior Justice League team into a dark and gripping storyline that was still fun. That’s some real talent on board so far.

In addition to them, Simon Kinberg, who is is busy producing Episode VII will also be helping out the new show by writing a script for an episode or two. And a little executive producing thrown on the side. The show premieres next year in the American fall, with a sneak peek available at Star Wars Celebration Europe, later this year.
