With there having been so much talk – mainly shouting – about what Jared Leto’s Joker looks like, or doesn’t look like, it’s easy to forget that he’s not actually the star of DC’s Suicide Squad and will probably just have an extended cameo in the movie. No, the real stars of Suicide Squad are, well, the Suicide Squad, or as they’re officially known in the DC universe: Task Force X. Up until now though, we’ve only seen a shot of the actors/actresses assembled, but not dressed as their characters. David Ayer remedied that yesterday though.

The Suicide Squad writer-director tweeted out a pic of the fully costumed cast with the message “Task Force X assembled and ready”, and they look really cool.

And in case you’re wondering who that motley crew of villains are, here’s the full roll-call from left to right. Adam Beach (Cowboys & Aliens) as Slipknot, Jai Courtney (Jack Reacher, Terminator: Genisys) as Boomerang, Cara Delevingne (Paper Towns) as Enchantress, Karen Fukuhara as Katana (a role that previously had not been revealed), Joel Kinnaman (RoboCop, Run All Night) as Rick Flagg, Margot Robbie (The Wolf Of Wall Street, Focus) as Harley Quinn, Will Smith (Men In Black, Ali) as Deadshot, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Lost, Thor: The Dark World) as Killer Croc, and Jay Hernandez (Hostel) as El Diablo.

Missing from that lineup is Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, the aforementioned Leto’s Joker, Ike Barinholtz as Dr. Hugo Strange, Raymond Olubowale as King Shark and Common as some undisclosed mystery role.

Smith also revealed a much closer look at his Deadshot – complete with his iconic mask this time – on his personal Facebook page. While over the weekend some set pics revealed his character in his civilian clothes, which appear to channeling some Shaft.WillSmith_Deadshot_SuicideSquad

I have to say, I’m really liking what I’m seeing here, especially how Ayer and co are not shying away from the comic book-iness of the characters themselves. Katana is a picture perfect adaptation, Deadshot has his wrist mounted pistols and just look at that Killer Croc! Marvel’s comic book universe has often felt a bit more grounded than DC Comics’ and this tone was sort of reflected by the earlier Marvel movies, as most characters were more science-based in nature (see: Thor, not being a thunder god). It took a good number of movies before we finally saw them really let loose with the more outlandish, proper comic book characters (Guardians of the Galaxy, come on down!). But with Marvel now having proven that audiences are a lot more accepting than most studio execs give them credit for, DC look to be jumping straight into the crazy deep end with this. And I applaud them for it.

Now there was one more character that was actually spotted on the Suicide Squad set, but since it could be considered a SPOILER, you’re going to have to highlight the text to read: According to ComingSoon.net, Ben Affleck was seen hanging around the area in Canada, and reportedly also seen moving about on set wrapped up under a blanket so as to hide him from the sight of onlookers. Which clearly didn’t work.

His appearance seemingly confirms rumours heard last year about the film’s script, which had Batman show up on security footage that Task Force X was discussing. This is a big deal, as in this timeline, the Joker is apparently the only person who has ever clearly seen Batman face to face. Bats and Mr J are supposed to have another face-off in this movie, which will reportedly setup a solo Batman film further down the line.
[END SPOILER]

As you may recall, the Suicide Squad is comprised of a team of incarcerated villains – hence the Belle Reeve prison logo in the pic above – who are forced by the government to perform black ops mission in exchange for shorter sentences. Since they’re villains, they’re expendable to the government and their handler Amanda Waller, making them perfect for the most dangerous missions.

Suicide Squads is scheduled for release on August 5, 2016.

  1. I am way more excited for this than Batman vs the other guy. I seriously hope that with the multitude of characters they don’t loose the plot trying to give everyone screen time and plausible back stories and just get on with chewing bubble gum and kicking ass.

I agree, my excitement level for this is higher. However, I am still super excited for the batman vs movie. It could be really good.

I seriously hope it is. I just can’t buy into the Ben Afleck is Batman at the moment. I think it may be that I enjoyed the Nolan trilogy As it was not that long ago that this almost seems like it is nothing more than a Batman rip off even though I know it isn’t.

Yeah that’s probably the biggest issue here. Afleck has a lot to prove, and while I do not doubt his acting skills… I too am constantly reminded by how awesome Nolan’s bat was and how amazing Bale’s acting was in it. He played Batman like a champ, and had 3 titles to built the character in.

I never realised how white Will Smith’s fingers are. I did a double take thinking it was a cosplay but the eye gives it away, def him. Anyway, this looks pretty cool so far. I have never read Suicide Squad so am looking forward to this. Surprised to see such a big cast comprising so much upcoming and established talent, those $20 million dollar paychecks are a thing of the past for most actors now I guess.
