An odd thing has been happening with Terminator Genisys. Yes, I still get brain freeze and go all cross-eyed at the horrific spelling of that title, but instead of the initial sense of trepidation and WTF-ness I originally felt for this production, the more I see and hear about the upcoming parallel-quel lately, the more excited I get to see it. And this new action packed UK trailer is certainly not helping to dissuade me from that notion.

We’ve already seen a number of the bigger action beats in some of the longer trailers, but there’s still lots of new footage to be found here, including our first look in-film at JK Simmons.

I still can’t get enough of Arnie just dive bombing a helicopter!

[PLEASE NOTE: SOME MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD]

Now, it’s been reported that Simmons’ character O’Brien will be an alcoholic reporter who’s been secretly following the story of Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) and her guardian Terminator (old Arnold Schwarzenegger) for 30 years. Simmons stated that while his character just has a bit part in this film, it’s written in such a way so as to expand in the follow-up films. And the same appears to be the case for Dayo Okeniyi’s Danny Dyson, the son of the creator of the first Terminators, Miles Bennet Dyson, who is said to have a much larger role later. And it would seem that “later” may not be too far off anymore.

/Film was recently able to visit the set of the film and learned a number of things, namely that while Terminator Genisys had always been intended as the start of a new “completely standalone” trilogy, the production schedule is being escalated with the second and third films set to be shot back to back over the course of a 9-month shoot. It would appear that the powers that be – and practically everybody that /Film spoke to – are very confident in the movie they’ve delivered here.

And to perhaps help with fans’ confidence with this, the cast and crew apparently barely ever mentioned the later movies – Schwarzenegger reportedly stated that Terminator: Salvation was pretty much being ignored – while they were constantly referencing James Cameron’s classic films, with director Alan Taylor stating that the “first two films are our compass, inspiration and our guide.”

They’ve also confirmed that the film will indeed be taking place equally in three different times – 1984, 2017 and 2029 – with each era featuring it’s very own Time Displacement Machine constructed by a relevant Terminator using the technology of its respective time. Apparently the electromagnetic fields that these TDM’s employ to send people into the timestream, will be a “big story point” in the trilogy.

Another scientific concept that the film will apparently delve into is that of technological singularity – the ultimate melding of man and machine. This revelation appears to support the rumoured claims of the identity of Matt Smith’s character. Up until now, we’ve only seen the Doctor Who actor in those horrible shouty EW promo pics for the film, but he hasn’t appeared in any further footage or images. And according to Latino Review, that’s because Smith’s character is actually a huge one. I won’t spoil it any further for you guys here, but just click the link if you want to know more.

Back to /Film’s set visit, and they also learned that the movie is being “described as not a traditional remake or a continuation or a sequel, but more of a reimagining — kind of like JJ Abrams’ Star Trek.” Like I mentioned earlier, this new story – much like Star Trek did in 2009 – is being written in such a way that a new audience can experience and enjoy it without much knowledge of the earlier films. That being said, there are supposedly still tons of easter eggs and nods back to the original (like Jai Courtney’s Kyle Reese wearing custom-made versions of the exact same Nike sneakers that Michael Biehn’s original iteration of the character did in the first film). It’s also been confirmed that we will be revisiting scenes from the original movies, but they won’t just be rehashed versions of stuff we’ve seen before, but rather play out in new and unexpected ways.

One thing about the original films was they both got an R-rating whereas the newer movies were all PG-13. At this point it’s uncertain where Terminator Genisys would end up, with the filmmakers saying that they would really only be able to give a proper answer when in post-production.

Thematically, while the first film is essentially a love story and the second is a father\son tale (ignoring the third and fourth films here), then according to director Alan Taylor, Terminator Genisys is “a dysfunctional family story: Mirroring father figures in this with a love story at the core and the issue of family.”

And of course also Austrian accented robots punching each other in the face.

Terminator Genisys also stars Jason Clarke, Byung Hun-Lee and Courtney B. Vance. It is scheduled for release on July 1, 2015.
