New trailer for Iron Fist, plus Sigourney Weaver cast as villain for The Defenders!

If you had just finished binge-watching Luke Cage and were desperately looking for that next Marvel/Netflix fix, Marvel had you covered at the New York Comic Con on Saturday. During Marvel’s panel, moderated by head of Marvel TV Jeph Loeb, the cast for the upcoming Iron Fist finally appeared in full in public. They are Finn Jones as lead Danny Rand aka Iron Fist, Jessica Henwick as Colleen Wing, Jessica Stroup as Joy Meachum, Tom Pelphrey as Ward Meachum, David Wenham as Harold Meachum, and Rosario Dawson reprising the role of Claire Temple which she has played in Daredevil, Jessica Jones and most recently Luke Cage.

The Iron Fist cast were actually a bit tired on stage, as they had literally wrapped production on the series that very same morning. But they were all in attendance to get their own first look at some brand new footage that was shown off to the crowd in attendance. This footage included a new trailer as well as some scenes. The latter has not been made available online, but TV.com were onhand with descriptions:

The (Comic Con-exclusive, sorry) clips themselves were exciting, showing Danny Rand’s (Jones) return to New York after many years of training — everyone thought he was dead. But not only is he still alive, he’s now a kung fu master. Three fight scenes were shown: a brawl with security guards at Rand Enterprises HQ for which Rand is barefoot, a signature Marvel hallway fight with an Iron Fist twist (he’s like a deadly ballerina), and a cage match between petite, white-jumpsuited ass-kicker Colleen Wing (Henwick) and two goons almost twice her size. You heard it here first: Colleen Wing is going to be your next Marvel obsession.

The fight scenes are the gritty Marvel/Netflix fights we’ve come to expect. There’s lots of bones snapping and blood spurting, and you wince in pain watching it. There were some character scenes screened too, between Rand and the people who left him for dead and aren’t too happy he’s back.

That all sounds pretty awesome, especially seeing Colleen Wing in action. If you were eagle-eyed enough, you would have seen her name pop up as in Easter Egg in Luke Cage as Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple takes her details to look for martial arts lessons.

As cool as those descriptions are though, we’re here to actually see Iron Fist punch some people. And that’s where this fantastic new trailer comes in, which isn’t just your run of the mill punching, but we also get our first look at Iron Fist’s titular fiery appendages as well as his signature dragon tattoo. Check it out:

Fifteen years after being presumed dead in a plane crash, Danny Rand (Finn Jones) mysteriously returns to New York City determined to reclaim his birthright and family company. However, when a long-destined enemy rises in New York, this living weapon is forced to choose between his family’s legacy and his duties as the Iron Fist.

Oh damn, son! That looks great!

But the awesomeness didn’t stop there. Following on from Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage, Iron Fist is the last of the Marvel/Netflix solo series, which has all been building towards The Defenders crossover mini-series. And for the first time, all four of those characters got to share the stage as Jeph Loeb brought out Daredevil‘s Charlie Cox, Jessica Jones‘ Krysten Ritter, and Luke Cage‘s Mike Colter to join Finn Jones on stage. And then Loeb dropped a bombshell by introducing veteran actress Sigourney Weaver and announcing that she has been cast as the primary villain in The Defenders.

No hints were given as to the identity of Weaver’s character, but rumours have been pointing to the ninja organization The Hand, seen terrorizing Daredevil in season one and two, will play a big part in affairs. You may also recall that Daredevil season one’s Madam Gao – who can actually be briefly seen in the Iron Fist trailer above – used a logo that ties in very closely with the Iron Fist mythology. Jessica Jones and Luke Cage hasn’t done much to advance this overall plot that began in Daredevil, but it looks Iron Fist may just be picking up all those strands and running with them.

And of course there’s The Punisher which also fits into the mix somehow. Spinning out of Daredevil season two, Jon Bernthal will be reprising his titular role as the violent vigilante Frank Castle in an upcoming solo series. There’s no release date for The Punisher yet, but the series actually started filming last week already to the surprise of many, which means it may just be squeezed in next year before we actually get to The Defenders. Either way, expect to see a familiar face in that series, as Bernthal took to the mic on-stage on Saturday and revealed that Deborah Ann Woll will be reprising her Daredevil character of Karen Page in his solo series.

Iron Fist, which will see Dexter veteran Scott Buck as showrunner, debuts on Netflix on March 17, 2017. The Punisher and The Defenders will follow later in the year at unspecified dates.

I just feel like we have such strong series as it is. Do we really have to do ALL the hero collaborations this gen? That’s all it’s been about lately.

            Yea, quite true.
But the Marvel series are so different, and I absolutely love all of them. I’d just hate to see The Defenders come at the expense of one or all of those individual series.

Marvel has yet to disappoint us. I have faith.

In my eyes we’re living in the golden age of tv series now, where the quality of many of them (in story, visuals, talent etc) exceed movies by a great margin.
Legends of Tomorrow is a weak show and Arrow nearly didn’t make it because of it (I sure stopped watching Arrow at that time), but as you say, Marvel is yet to disappoint us. So is Netflix, with their awesome original series.

Legends was weak. Arrow started out great, but declined after season 2.
Flash is still pretty good, but I rather hated the first episode of S3. Watered down version of Flashpoint.

Netflix is doing such a great job right now with their series. I read just today how they were the only ones who didn’t want to change Stranger Things entirely.

What idiots would want to change what of Stranger Things? That show was near perfect, start to finish.

I also enjoy Flash a lot. Haven’t started with Arrow again yet.

Apparently about 20 different studios rejected Stranger Things. They either wanted to take the kids out or take the adult bits out, hence changing the whole tone of the series. But the Duffer Brothers held out, knowing their vision was good.

First episode of Arrow S5 was rather good I thought. Also not a big fan of Flash S3’s start.

I’ll read up on Arrow s4 and then give s5 a try. But I’m not going anywhere close to Legends.

As someone who slogged through S4, that’s a good plan. 😀

Only reason I’m really giving LoT S2 a chance is because of the JSA angle. I remember those comics as a kid fondly.

I saw the JSA thing, it intrigued me. If I hear good things about S2, I may give it a look. But I hear “it’s okay” as often as I did about s1, then I’ so going to avoid it.
Time is precious to me, I’d rather watch better things or play some cool games that waste it on shitty shows.

Sigourney Weaver is like Anthony Hopkins; just their presence makes something amazing!
