Patriots Day

So far everything we’ve seen about the upcoming Peter Berg film Patriots Day has focused on showing uplifting parts of the film and placing the U.S. patriotism at the front. This second trailer that has arrived finally gives us a glimpse into the actual horror of the events of the Boston Marathon bombing and the turmoil it put people through.

It’s still trying to spark a strong sense of patriotism and emotion if you’re American, but I like how they are not trying to gloss over the horrors of the events. The film was looking a little too sugary sweet for my liking in the first trailer, but this one feels like it’s more of a tense and thrilling manhunt, which is what it should be. More guns is never a bad thing. And it stars real police officers, so expect lots of doughnut eating whatever it is police do in situations like this.

This trailer also gives us a slight glimpse of what to expect in the final score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. They are two of my favourite film composers of late and I have loved the scores in all of their last few films (Gone Girl, The Social Network). This film is something quite different though, so looking forward to see what they come up with.

The film is led by Mark Wahlberg, whose character is based on several people from the actual events. It features an incredible support cast of John Goodman, JK Simmons, Kevin Bacon and Michelle Monahagan. It’s the kind of story that should focus on the team effort rather than any individual, so hopefully Wahlberg’s lead role is not too overwhelming.

Patriots Day is scheduled for release in early 2017.
