  1. We need a new Galactic Battlegrounds also if they’re “looking into” a new Age of Empires

      Head of games “No”
Bill ” Ok, thanks, just checking in.”

    My garden flooded.

Just too much water to drain away. One of the vegetable gardens is completely under. We “cleverly” demarcated the areas to plant with bricks. That is where the water goes.

Especially when a motherboard gets hit. And the USB ports are the only things not working. But need a whole new PC just because new boards need a new CPU. And your old graphics card does not work on this new board. And the memory, whilst it MIGHT work will not work as well as it CAN.

Mine went without lightning, Radeon-AMD card overheated enough not break itself but to heat up the PCI-E controller so that it popped.

Incorrect timing means on when I bought and changing CPU specs/tech means pretty much just the HD can be salvaged

          • miaau

            March 10, 2016 at 16:40

Seen two offices where the lightning went through the switches. Boom.

also, as you say, some PC’s this is broken or that is broken, not the whole thing, despite a lightning strike.

          • HvR

            March 10, 2016 at 16:42

Do you guys get it via the power lines or Telkom lines? I’m surge protected up to the wazoo just for my home stuff due to Eskom and my cheap generator.

          • miaau

            March 10, 2016 at 16:43

The first one, I was in the office with several people and lightning nailed a big tree right outside. All the lights tripped at once and the power was out, out. City had to restore. When power was restored, all the switches were dead AND some of the PC’s, in weird ways, were also dead. Also, the plugs and stuffed plugged into the plugs, nothing was damaged. ONLY network based equipment, connected to the fried switches.

I think a near direct lightning strike will still hurt you.

          • HvR

            March 10, 2016 at 16:54

Is there overall or individual surge protection?

Lot of people think lighting strike a single spot but there is only single point of breakthrough, the actual surge that follows covers multiple points over wide area.

          • miaau

            March 10, 2016 at 16:56

“Is there overall or individual surge protection?”

I am afraid I do not know enough to answer that question. I think, in the office, there was no real surge protection. the servers had, in theory through the UPS, but the UPS’s are designed to protect against power line surges or brownouts, not lightning level voltage.

          • HvR

            March 10, 2016 at 16:59

Yes only certain UPS units have high voltage – fast cut out. this is why I have multiple layers I do not trust UPS slow cut out to protect against a proper line surge.

          • miaau

            March 10, 2016 at 17:02

Brownouts, that is also where they come into their own, the UPS systems. I remember an office block years ago, getting the logs from the electrician and wondering the effect of the building supply stuff up would be on my poor servers. Get some really good quality UPS’s in there.

Some reason the building had issues sometimes, most people and equipment missed it, but sometimes voltage supply dipped, for reasons I never ever will understand, but the people in the know assured us, the IT staff, that was the case.

          • HvR

            March 10, 2016 at 17:12

Biggest culprit in local building issues is actual noise induced on the lines.

Usually equipment with motors or compressors built in the rarely 90’s or earlier.

Had big head scratcher once with measuring equipment in factory jig going wacky once in a while causing false failure turns out was old bar fridge the workers plug in on the factory line power rail. Every time the compressor switched on or off huge noise pulses went out on the lines.

well, the rest of the “flooding” is fine, but I think we lost some of the winter crop. Which is ironic, cause last we discussed losing it because of lack of rain.

Not as bad as in 2010. We got some people in to dig and make paths for water. In 2010, the poor dog hid on the stoep, which flooded as there was no place for the water to go. Charming. We found the dog with water half way up legs. Turns out the stoep doors were water tight.
