I feel you, I really do.
As I get older, I find this time of year to be troubling to my professional life, as we need to work on projects, R&D and that sort.
It is true, you do, to a degree, turn into your managers. Hope they were good……

My grandmother, a very wise woman, explained to us that we need to find careers that make us happy, not chasing money. She said if you can find a job where, some or even most of the days, fly by, you are doing well. If you can, from that career, buy a big house and expensive cars, what a bonus. The end goal was to be happy and I think she is right.

Think the truth lies somewhere in the middle finding something that you love enough and still able to make a comfortable living.
I have been in the situation (luckily it was only short term) of effectively working 2 jobs to keep the lights on and stomachs full. The exhausting of a 16 hour day + stomach ulcers of financial worries quickly sucked the joy from doing one of the things I love.
Lot of degrees and studies in very interesting fields out there which will put you in debt for the rest of your life.
