Army of One is the upcoming comedy starring Nicolas Cage as a man on a mission from God travelling to Pakistan to capture Osama bin Laden. It sounds like the perfect vehicle for the kind of crazy Cage has been parodied all around the internet for over the last few years, and while true that’s not the really crazy part of this story.

The movie is actually based on a true story, namely the 2010 GQ article by Chris Heath that chronicled the (mis)adventures of Gary Faulkner, who attempted this mission over ten times. It’s a fascinating read that makes Nick look like a paragon of sanity.

The official plot synopsis which, along with the trailer, is courtesy of Entertainment Weekly is as follows:

Nicolas Cage plays Gary Faulkner, an ex-con, unemployed handyman, and modern-day Don Quixote who receives a vision from God (Russell Brand) telling him to capture Osama bin Laden. Armed with only a single sword purchased from a home shopping network, Faulkner travels to Pakistan to complete his mission.

I spent most of the trailer sitting there thinking, like everybody else in the trailer and, I’m sure, in real life who dealt with him, that this man is more than a few beers short of a six-pack. It looks completely unbelievable, and yet also surprisingly funny. I think it helps this movie a lot that it looks to be playing as a pure comedy without touching on any of the many serious issues that surrounding it.

What do you think?

Army of One is due for release on streaming services in the US on 4 November. Directed by Larry Charles (Borat, Curb Your Enthusiasm), with the script by Rajiv Joseph (My America) and Scott Rothman (Draft Day), it stars Nicolas Cage, Russell Brand, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Rainn Wilson, and Amer Chadha-Patel as Osama Bin Laden.
