Not everyone has a happy ending in this first trailer for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2!

I’ve written a lot about The Amazing Spider-Man and it’s upcoming sequel – a lot! – but now it’s time to stop talking about the film for a little bit. Mainly because it’s pretty hard to talk when your jaw’s on the floor. Yes, after leaked posters, cast reshuffles, teaser clips and a whole lot of speculation, the first trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man is finally here, and (to borrow one of Spidey’s other titular adjectives) it looks spectacular!

We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.

It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.

Holy comic book adaptations, Batman! Look past the costume changes for the villains, and that looks like it was pulled straight off the comic page and onto screen. A lot of that has to do with the newly designed costume, which is the closest the movie version has ever come to the original, but even more of it is due to director Marc Webb seemingly just nailing those iconic Spider-Man splash page action shots that us comic books have been seeing and loving for decades.

My main problem with the first film came from Webb and co being beholden to retelling an origin story that had already been told not too long ago. I loved the cast and the pitch-perfect characterization though – particularly Andrew Garfield’s far superior and far more faithful take on both Peter Parker and his costumed alter ego than what Tobey Maguire gave us – and maintained that the moment they moved out of that already fairly worn out story space to do their own thing, that’s when this franchise would truly shine. And based on that trailer, I think that they may just be exactly what they’re doing. I’m still a bit iffy on the Rhino redesign, but I’m really liking everything else I’m seeing here. Especially the fact that the whole angle about Peter’s father perhaps having experimented on him, which was tossed out of the first film after being sold as an “untold origin story”, is finally getting some screen time.

Oh, and did you see what was in the background around the 01:14 mark? VULTURE AND DOC OCK, PEOPLE! Sinister Six, here we come! My body is ready.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be electrifying cinemas on May 2, 2014.

  1. Sinister 6 would be good, but I want a proper Kingpin story.

Michael Clarke Duncan was a very cool Kingpin in Daredevil if somewhat under-utilised.

OMW… been a while since I actually got goosebumps and chills from a movie trailer… looks like it’ll be an awesome movie, and I’m very pleased they’re keeping the comics close to heart while creating these new Spidey movies.

This looks so fucking bad – I get Batman & Robin feels from it. Didn’t they learn from Spiderman 3 that too many villains spoil the broth? And now Garfield sounds all whiny and serious like Tobey in Spiderman 3. And the effects look as cheesy as fuck too.

I thought there was no such thing as an opinion that is wrong… until now…

I have to say, this whole “multiple villains = failure” thing is just not true. The Dark Knight essentially featured 2 villains, and there are very few people who would say that movie was a failure. It’s all about how you use those villains, how you integrate them into the story so that they’re not only developed enough, but also integral to the plot as a whole, and not just their portion of it.

This is where Spider-Man 3 dropped the ball. You had 3 disparate villainous storylines (Sandman, Venom and Hobgoblin) which were just slapped together to try and form one cohesive narrative, but you could still smell the glue from where Raimi tried to stick them together.

Also, you had that whole horrible song and dance routine that should be illegal to show children.
