In a cinema year filled with blue pyjamas wearing aliens, cutlery fisted mutants, monster punching robots and some little people stealing some gold (and no, that last part is not for a film about Darryn’s family) it’s kind of hard to get noticed when you’re just a small budget dramady. But luckily for film festival favourite, The Way, Way Back, it also sports a fantastic cast, tons of charm and Steve Carell being a douche.

THE WAY, WAY BACK is the funny and poignant coming-of-age story of 14-year-old Duncan’s (Liam James) summer vacation with his mother, Pam (Toni Collette), her overbearing boyfriend, Trent (Steve Carell), and his daughter Steph (Zoe Levin). Having a rough time fitting in, the introverted Duncan finds an unexpected friend in gregarious Owen (Sam Rockwell), manager of the Water Wizz water park. Through his funny, clandestine friendship with Owen, Duncan slowly opens up and begins to finally find his place in the world—all during a summer he will never forget.

The Way, Way Back has picked up tons of praise from just about every single person who’s seen it thus far, with many reviewers proclaiming it as one of, if not their favourite film of the year’s earlier festival season. It’s apparently a super-charming coming of age story, that’s laugh out loud funny yet still extremely touching.

It’s also the feature film directorial debut of Jim Rash, better known to most as the definitely, totally not gay Dean from Community, who co-directed and co-write the film with Nat Faxton, with whom he also won an Oscar last year for their adapted screenplay for The Descendants.

The Way, Way Back currently doesn’t have a local release date, but opened this weekend past, July 5, in the States.
