Get out your diaries – The Movies writers round up the releases to watch out for between October and the new year.

Interstellar: The highly anticipated new Christopher Nolan (Batman: The Dark Knight) film follows a group of explorers as they travel through wormholes looking for a new place to live because Earth is dying. Please, no jokes about wormholes in wormholes in wormholes…
[column size=one_half position=first ]
Annabelle: John and Mia Form have it all. A great marriage, a home and a content lifestyle. But after surviving an attack from a satanic cult, the couple find that their troubles have only just begun, as a simple doll that was bought as a gift has become a conduit for evil and supernatural entities.
[/column] [column size=one_half position=last ]
Big Hero 6: San Fransokyo falls under attack from malevolent forces that the cops are powerless to stop. Along with best friends Go Go Tomago, beatnik Wasabi, chemistry whiz Honey Lemon, fanboy Fred and inflatable robot Baymax, young genius Hiro Hamada must save the day as a member of Big Hero 6.
[/column]
Horns: We’ve experienced some pretty horrific hangovers. But when Ig Perrish wakes up sprouting horns that can make people confess their sins, a couple of headache pills probably won’t help. His new-found powers will help him find the killer of his girlfriend though. Problem is, he’s the number one suspect.
[column size=one_half position=first ]
Into The Woods: Mashing up fairy tales seems to hold some appeal, if Malifecent is anything to go by. Meryl Streep plays some kind of strange witch in this mish-mash of forever afters and big named actors. Johnny Depp might just possibly be the giant from the beanstalk and for once Chris Pine might not play as an A-type with too much talent.
[/column] [column size=one_half position=last ]
Trash: One man’s trash is another man’s drama-thriller (driller?) about a group of kids in Brazil who eke out a living poking through trash dumps. When they discover a mysterious bag – the contents of which some corrupt government officials would stop at nothing to get back – they find their world flipped upside down.
[/column]
Dracula Untold: Dracula becomes a superhero in this alternative take on the legend of Vampire Number One. More aimed at special effects junkies than Twilight refugees, it’s got a lot of swordfights, bats and giant fists coming in from above.
[column size=one_half position=first ]
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1: It’s the beginning of the end for bow-slinging reality TV star rebellion leader Katniss Everdeen and her intrepid band, as their battle against the nefarious President Snow and the oppressive – but always fashionably garbed – forces of the Capitol moves out of the arena and into the cities themselves.
[/column] [column size=one_half position=last ]
Left Behind: Millions of people suddenly vanish during the Biblical Rapture, and chaos abounds as the world descends into anarchy. Nicholas Cage is a pilot who has to save his aircraft and passengers immediately after the event occurs, while looking very confused. He shouldn’t be: we’ve watched the Ghost Rider sequel.
[/column]
The Book Of Life: From producer Guillermo del Toro and director Jorge Gutierrez comes an animated comedy bathed in the unique style of Mexico’s iconic Day Of The Dead festival. Stuck with a decision that will change his life forever, Manolo must travel through the worlds of life and death in order to be reunited with the love of his life, and afterlife.
[column size=one_half position=first ]
The Penguins Of Madagascar: Loved Madagascar and its particular brand of humour? Well, the funniest bits always belonged to the penguins and Chris Rock, but if there has to be a spin-off movie, may it be the penguins. Well, for once Hollywood has read our minds. Then again, this was bound to happen.
[/column] [column size=one_half position=last ]
Wild: Based on Cheryl Strayed’s memoir , Reese Witherspoon stars as Strayed in her account of a 1,100 mile solo hike at the age of 26, with no previous hiking experience. It served as a journey of self-discovery to help rebuild her life after the death of her mother when 22, her subsequent heroin addiction and the dissolution of her marriage.
[/column]
Unforgiven: There is a certain poetry at work here. One of Clint Eastwood’s greatest cowboy films was based on a Japanese Samurai epic. Now Ken Watanabe is starring in a Japanese samurai remake of one of Clint Eastwood’s Western epics – and it looks pitch perfect.
[column size=one_half position=first ]
Dear White People: Exploring the misconceptions of racial identity, four Ivy League black students poke fun at clichés and stereotypes that their culture has created in a new America. For a change this is not some heavy drama, but what looks like a pretty smart comedy.
[/column] [column size=one_half position=last ]
Horrible Bosses 2: The three hapless employees are back in action after their newly-launched business is threatened by an unscrupulous investor. The trio decide to kidnap the investor’s son and hold him for ransom to protect their business. There’s way anything could go wrong, right? SLOW MO!
[/column]
Fury: With World War 2 drawing to a close and the Axis forces on the verge of defeat, it’s up to one battle-hardened tank crew to go behind enemy lines and face overwhelming odds in order to finally topple the Nazi stronghold of Germany.
[column size=one_half position=first ]
The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies: All of Middle-Earth collides in one final battle as dragons, dwarves, orcs, men and elves march to war in the thrilling conclusion to the saga of The Hobbit. ‘Final,’ of course, until the whole business starts again in Lord Of The Rings.
[/column] [column size=one_half position=last ]
Birdman: Is it weird that Michael Keaton is playing a role about a washed-up actor best remembered for playing a superhero? Not that Keaton is washed up, but he’s been punching below his weight class for too long. Birdman, in all of its brilliant weirdness, might finally change that.
[/column]
Gone Girl: An upcoming mystery-thriller based on the novel of the same name, directed by David Fincher. After the mysterious disappearance of his wife Ben Affleck comes under intense scrutiny after his innocence following her disappearance comes into question. Expect many twists, skeleton-filled closets and unclean laundry as the mystery unfolds.
[column size=one_half position=first ]
Drive Hard: John Cusack robs a mob bank and Thomas Jane is his unwitting getaway driver. This could be fun, providing the two have good chemistry together. Otherwise Drive Hard might just be a string of been-there action scenes and comedic mishaps. Unfortunately the trailer fails to convince us that this will be good, but since when can you trust trailers anyway?
[/column] [column size=one_half position=last ]
Foxcatcher: Miles Bennet is arguably the most low-key award-winning director working in Hollywood, mainly because he makes movies where the lead performances overshadow everything else. And Foxcatcher appears to be no different, featuring acting brilliance by Steve Carrell and Channing Tatum as the wrestling coach and prodigy whose relationship take a deadly turn.
[/column]
Paddington: Based on the beloved teddy bear of the same name, Paddington follows the adventures of a young Peruvian bear fascinated by all things English. He travels to London in search of a home, where he’s adopted by the Brown family. It’s already spawned a series of creepy Paddington memes… don’t google them if you value the innocence of your youth.
[column size=one_half position=first ]
Dumb & Dumber To: If, like us, you often feel far to clever, Dumb & Dumber To is the antidote. You see how clever that title is?! Set some 20 years after the first movie the two (to) morons are in desperate need of a kidney.
[/column] [column size=one_half position=last ]
Whiplash: If someone ever asks you why you never mastered a musical instrument, tell them you were afraid you are a genius and you might have ended up with a ball-busting teacher like J. K. Simmons in Whiplash. This looks intense.
[/column]
The Interview: Team Frogen is at it again, taking the edgy humour from This is the End and upping it a notch with a gossip TV crew setting off to interview Kim Jong-un. North Korea already threatened war if it were released. Acting, directing, writing, starting the apocalypse… is there anything these guys can’t do?
[column size=one_half position=first ]
The Kingsman: Move over, 007! Colin Firth shows off some umbrella-fu as a very British secret agent who has to find and train the next generation of superspy in writer/director Matthew “Kick-Ass” Vaughn’s adaptation of Mark Millar’s comic The Secret Service.
[/column] [column size=one_half position=last ]
Catch Hell: When a former and washed up Hollywood actor by the name of Reagon Pearce finds himself kidnapped in Shreveport, Louisiana, he has to find some way of stopping all his worst secrets leak out, a fate worse than death for a thespian.
[/column]
Exodus: Being the method actor of renown that he is, is it possible Christian Bale actually did separate the Red Sea when filming this Ridley Scott take on the Biblical story of Moses vs Egypt? Let’s hope it’s more Gladiator than Robin Hood
[column size=one_half position=first ]
Exists: You may have missed the flurry of ‘found footage’ Bigfoot movies in the past few years, most recent and the best so far being the paint-drying Willow Creek. Will Exist, from the director of the Blair Witch Project buck the trend of boredom?
[/column][column size=one_half position=last ]
John Wick: Yes, it does feel like everyone is making a ‘messed with the wrong retired badass’ movie. Yet still this Keanu Reeves vehicle looks pretty awesome and has an incredible cast to boot, including Willem Dafoe and John Leguizamo.
