Just as we will always get inundated with trailers of obscure horror films repeating the same formula over and over again, so the same goes for those romantic dramas/comedies that get released all the time. To be fair, there is certainly a market for them as audiences do tend to flock to these kind of films, but nonetheless, the stories do get a little tired after a while.

This next film however does at least have a strong lead cast in two really up and coming actors in Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, who are apparently a couple in real life too, according to the ever reliable Wikipedia. Whether this adds to their on-screen romance or not, remains to be seen, though normally when you see real-life couples act together on-screen, it tends to be cringe-worthy. Hopefully this film proves that notion to be incorrect. This film is also looking to be a lot deeper than your average romantic drama, which hopefully means it will be a whole lot better as well.

The Light Between Oceans is a new film by Derek Cianfrance who has adapted this story from a popular novel by M.L Stedman of the same name. And this is the type of story which is likely to suit Cianfrance, whose previous films like Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines have also dealt with complex romantic relationships.

Yip, tissues will definitely be needed for the ladies and the likes of Trevor for this one.

The story focuses on a lighthouse-keeping couple, Tom and Isabel Sherbourne (played by Fassbender and Vikander) who are very much in love. Unfortunately, they’re unable to bring a child into the world, so when a healthy baby turns up in a boat along their isolated section of the coast, Isabel believes their prayers have been answered at long last. Tom, a war veteran and man of principles, thinks differently and makes a decision that threatens to tear the couple apart.

The official synopsis of the film is:

After four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia and takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, nearly half a day’s journey from the coast. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a season, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a baby’s cries on the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby.

Tom, who keeps meticulous records and whose moral principles have withstood a horrific war, wants to report the man and infant immediately. But Isabel insists the baby is a “gift from God,” and against Tom’s judgment, they claim her as their own and name her Lucy. When she is two, Tom and Isabel return to the mainland and are reminded that there are other people in the world. Their choice has devastated one of them.

The Light Between Oceans also stars Rachel Weisz and is set for release on September 16th of this year.
