Since 2010 we have been following the ups and downs, the sides to sides, and the sometimes just-barrelling-straight-on-through’s of Steve Buscemi’s gangster emperor Nucky Thompson, as he fought tooth and nail to hold onto and expand his empire. And after four seasons that has seen HBO’s Boardwalk Empire heaped with as much awards as it had shocking and memorable moments, the time has finally come for writer/creator Terence Winter’s machiavellian tale to come to an end.

According to Michael K. Williams (via Den of Geek), who plays Nucky’s sometimes ally, sometimes rival Chalky White, the show’s final season will be jumping ahead to 1931, seven years after the crazy events of season four, setting it right in the Depression when “days of the shiny shoes and fancy suits are long gone.”

And based that intriguing possibility (especially after how dramatically the fourth season’s finale was), as well as this this first teaser trailer for the show’s fifth and final hurrah of a season, it seems that this highly recommended series is definitely going out with a bang. Several bangs from several firearms to be exact.

From Terence Winter, Emmy-winning writer of “The Sopranos” and Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese, “Boardwalk Empire” is set in the 1920s during Prohibition, and chronicles the life and times of Enoch “Nucky” Thompson, the undisputed leader of Atlantic City.

Boardwalk Empire‘s final season is scheduled to air sometime in the 2014 US Fall season.

I fell out of touch with this after Season 2, but maybe it’s time I meet up with Nucky again.
