Only a madman would attempt to watch this trailer for GODS OF EGYPT!

The last time Alex Proyas got behind the camera to dabble in the fantasy genre, we got both The Crow and Dark City, two cult classics that are still pretty damn cool today. Hell, even I, Robot was rather entertaining despite its bastardization of Isaac Aasimov’s original texts. So of course you can be damn sure that I was always paying attention to Gods of Egypt, Proyas’ latest genre offering.

But whereas as the previous two films were all dark and brooding and grimy, Gods of Egypt is seemingly the exact opposite if this first trailer is any indication. It’s bright and shiny and flashy – which are all adjectives that were certainly thrown at I, Robot as well, but the difference is that this looks, well, kind of f–king crazy! And not always in a good way. Definitely not in an Egyptian way!

It’s as if Proyas watched the recent Clash of the Titans remake and thought “Hmmm… Needs more of those dream sequences from Terry Gilliam’s Brazil. Oh and wouldn’t it be cool to see Leonidas fight Jaime Lannister?” and produced this as a result. While high on psychotropics. Now based on this preview alone, I could be wrong and this is in fact a bout of inspired genius – or maybe even one of those “so bad that it’s great” moments –  but at this point my Spidey-sense is seriously a-tingling. Proyas has had a reasonably solid track record with these things though and the film does look to be a visual treat, so I’m certainly willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for now and will probably still give it a watch either way. Maybe it’s because I just really like how badass Nikolaj Coster-Waldau looks in an eye patch*.

In this spectacular action-adventure inspired by the classic mythology of Egypt, the survival of mankind hangs in the balance as an unexpected mortal hero Bek (Brenton Thwaites) undertakes a thrilling journey to save the world and rescue his true love. In order to succeed, he must enlist the help of the powerful god Horus (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) in an unlikely alliance against Set (Gerard Butler), the merciless god of darkness, who has usurped Egypt’s throne, plunging the once peaceful and prosperous empire into chaos and conflict. As their breathtaking battle against Set and his henchmen takes them into the afterlife and across the heavens, both god and mortal must pass tests of courage and sacrifice if they hope to prevail in the epic final confrontation.

Along with the trailer, we also got the first batch of character posters for the movie showing off its principal cast.

Gods of Egypt stars Brenton Thwaites, Gerard Butler, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Chadwick Boseman, Geoffrey Rush, Rufus Sewell, Abbey Lee, Courtney Eaton and Elodie Yung. It is scheduled for release internationally on February 26, 2016.

*seriously, slap a grizzled beard and a mullet on that guy and you have your Solid Snake for a Metal Gear Solid movie.
