Oogieloves is now the worst grossing film of all time

Now, if you aren’t usually here on a Monday, then you’re missing out on the Monday Box Office Report, a section of the site that has won several Crying Monkeys awards, or so Kervyn tells me, while stifling a laugh. What a nice guy.

That’s where the top ten films of the North American box office is listed, along with their weekend tallies. Those films usually make millions. And then you get a film such as Oogieloves, which barely scrapes in any dough.

Oogieloves In The BIG Balloon Adventure, a film based on the childrens show, recently made just over $445 000 in its debut weekend. That’s not bad, right? Actually, it is, when you consider that the movie was released from 2160 theatres, meaning that it scraped in around $206 per big screen, over three days, giving it the dubious distinction of being the worst wide box office opening of all time. OF ALL TIME!

Want some more salt to rub in that polyester knife wound? According to those stats, around an average of six people per cinema, saw the film on opening day.

Compare that to a film such as Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom, and you’d get some perspective. His film, while it may have only made $523 000 on its debut weekend, did so in a mere four cinemas.

Right now, Oogieloves has taken over from Delgo, nega-surpassing the $511 200 weekend debut that it set a few years ago. So at least it has one accolade to add to its child-friendly puke-fest.

Although I’ve got a R50 bet with Kervyn that Doggie Boogie will soon beat this record as well.
