Paradise PD will never be accused of providing good taste comedy. It’s a show that’s more than comfortable with scraping the bottom of a barrel, punching low, and picking the fruit that hangs the lowest. In a way it’s actually admirable just how committed it is to wailing on the boundary of good taste with a giant purple dildo.
If you thought the show was incapable of providing any bad taste humour worse than what it did in season two when it arrived with pure “the hell with it” energy, you’d be…completely right! Paradise PD season 3 doesn’t clear the bar set by the last season of the second-worst cops to ever be on TV, right behind America’s actual real-life police force, but it has settled in a groove where it knows what it wants to be and what it wants to create.
It’s a tone that the latest season grabs right by the balls and runs wild with the second the show starts. The town of Paradise has been reduced to a giant atomic pizza, the fat jokes run freely, and an irradiated talking anal polyp with body-snatcher ambitions all take center-stage within the first five minutes of Paradise PD kicking off its new 12-episode run. Hey, at least the show doesn’t waste your time in letting you know exactly what kind of content you’re in for.
From that point, Paradise PD turns up the insanity to 11 and plunges its hands all the way up to the shoulders into a clogged toilet of bad taste. Hopson continues to be history greatest deviant with his numerous schemes and a literal Splooge McDuck vault of human sperm to swim in, Fitz is still married to an unfaithful dolphin, and Gina’s still lusting after Dusty, a chunky collection of Southern sweetness and some of the darkest running jokes in the show.
Series-long plots are now also fashionable, with Paradise PD having three primary threads woven throughout its story: World’s greatest loser Kevin makes an earnest attempt to win the heart of Gina, Paradise attempts to rebuild itself, and the ramifications of Fitz leading a double-life as a split-personality criminal mastermind catch up with him. You haven’t lived until you’ve heard Lance Reddick bemoan the fate of his slightly smaller yet still impossibly massive ballsack.
As far as animation goes, Paradise PD won’t be winning any Annie Awards, but when it shoots its load the end result is a bloody blast of violence, colour, and consistent…look I want to say quality but I’m going to settle for smooth vector lines on a digital screen. It gets the job done. Where the show still continues to shine is through the audio department, as the voice-cast still gives fantastic life to a crew of terrible people doing terrible things.
Sarah Chalke’s Gina effortlessly flips between being a genuinely sympathetic cop and a bloodthirsty law enforcer with an expired license to kill, Tom Kenny goes anti-SpongeBob as relentlessly angry police chief Crawford, and Dana Snyder goes all in voicing perverts, mutants, and Heaven’s Cake cult leaders.
Paradise PD continues to set a benchmark that’s so purposefully low that an easy joke about Australia being upside hits its head on it. It knows exactly what it wants to be: Crass to the max while delivering an endless collection of dick and fart jokes across each episode, but at least it’s never embarrassed by what it wants to be.
