Paramount and Nickelodeon to produce NICKTOONS crossover animated movie

In the words of Oprah Winfrey: “You get a shared movie universe! You get a shared movie universe! EVERYBODY GETS A SHARED MOVIE UNIVEEEEEERRRRRSSSSE!!” Yes, ever since Marvel had Tony Stark stroll into a bar in Incredible Hulk, Hollywood has gone crazy over the concept of characters from different movies hanging out together.

Usually this is a big logistical and financial problem because actors tend to be a testy, expensive lot. Which is why it’s kind of strange that we haven’t seen more of it on the animated side of things (After all, drawings don’t demand their own luxury trailer on the studio lot). And it seems that the folks over at Nickeledeon and Paramount have come to the same conclusion as they now have a Nicktoons feature film in development!

Deadline reports that this animated movie will see popular classic and more-recent Nickelodeon cartoons like Rugrats, Ren & Stimpy, Doug, Ahh! Real Monsters! and The Angry Beavers all teaming up together. Just what they will be doing together though is unclear for now, but the movie is being described as “an original narrative that sounds like Paramount’s answer to Who Framed Roger Rabbit”. The studios have tapped Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre‘s Jared Hess to direct and co-write this “original narrative” with wife and writing partner Jarusha Hess, but it apparently stems from an idea by Ali Mendes, who works for Parent at Disruption Entertainment and “grew up loving the characters and hatched the idea to bring them together”.

I certainly watched my fair share of Nickelodeon cartoons in my early teens in the 90’s and used to absolutely love Doug, Rugrats and Ren & Stimpy so I’m definitely on board with this. I’m particularly intrigued in whether they’re going to merge all the various art styles into one uniform approach or keep things diverse and interesting. I mean the way cartoons look is a huge part in their identity and character so they’re going to have to do something to retain that unique charm.

And although the titles mentioned above are the only ones specifically noted in the original report as being involved, Nickelodeon has such a massive library of characters that I highly doubt they won’t dip into it for more properties. After all, if there’s one duo that deserves a big screen movie treatment it has to be KaBlam‘s Prometheus and Bob!

Are there any other Nickelodeon cartoons from the broadcaster’s 25-year lifespan that you would like to see thrown into the mix as well? Spongebob Squarepants is of course the first name that will probably come to mind for many people (and he’s already had his time on the big screen) but what about Fairly Oddparents, Hey Arnold! even some Catdog? Hell, Nickelodeon even has such animated powerhouse like The Last Airbender and – wait for it – The World of David the Gnome aka Dawie die Kabouter to draw from!
