Pass judgement on this new poster and images for Dredd

Thus far, I’ve really liked what I’ve been seeing on Dredd, Hollywood’s second attempt at bringing the fabled 2000AD comic character, Judge Dredd, to life on the big screen. The first movie crashed ‘n burned ‘n melted ‘n decomposed ‘n stunk up the surrounding area for years because it completely misread the tone of its source material. Yes, John Wagner’s creation had it’s fair share of tongue-in-cheek humour, but it wasn’t a kiddie-frinedly slapstick comedy. It was pretty grim and serious stuff.

Well, grim and serious is definitely what director Pete Travis (Vantage Point) is going for here. Even on this first poster.

The feeling I’ve been getting from this production, which is compounded by this very minimal but damn good looking poster – is that director Travis and screenwriter Alex Garland (Sunshine, 28 Days Later) has firmly placed the character before the actor this time. And no disrespect to Karl Urban, who will be donning the helmet this time, it’s just that the first film felt like a typical Sylvester Stallone action flick that happened to take place in a world that sorta kinda resembled a comic you may have read once. Only with far higher quantities of retardation and Rob Schneider. (Which is sort of tautologous, really.)

And just because we’re such nice guys – contrary to what your mothers may say about us – here are 2 new images from Dredd to help pass the time until September.

Synopsis:

“Dredd” takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary. The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Peter Travis bring “Dredd” to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip.

Wow, that poster alone makes this worth it. Would love to get one and have it framed. The screens look good as well. Still not getting excited, but that is just on principle.

LOL! The bottom most screenshot is the entrance at the Cape Town Civic Centre. See the Artscape right in front?

I can handle it. But it can be bad – ever seen Death Race 2? They didn’t even bother to cover the information signs in the Castle, which was posing as a jail.
