Patty Jenkins wants third Wonder Woman film to be set in the present

We may not even have Wonder Woman 2 on our big screens yet but Patty Jenkins definitely believes it’s going to be a success with fans and is already talking about her plans for a third appearance of Gal Gadot’s superhero.

After reversing the typical trend and having a female-led superhero film actually prove to be successful and a massive hit with both critics and audiences alike, I guess it makes sense for Jenkins to feel optimistic about the success of future movies. And even though the franchise hit a low with Justice League shortly after that film, it still seems to be even stronger than ever thanks to the massive success of Aquaman. It proves that audiences have not grown tired of Warner Bros and DC movies, just bad ones. So, if Wonder Woman can continue to build on the formula and charm that made the first film a success, there should be little doubt that people will want to see more of it.

And in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter in promoting the upcoming second film, she revealed her vision for where the third movie will take Diana. After the first film was set in the First World War and saw Diana defeat Ares, the God of War, the second film is taking a massive time jump to 1984 – with Steve Trevor somehow still around. And it seems Jenkins would want to continue with the time jumping trend as she revealed she wants to bring Diana back into the modern world for the third film in the series:

I’m not planning to put it in the past again because where are you going to go? You have to go forward. It’s definitely a contemporary story. That’s all I can say. Where we put it and how that gets figured out, I haven’t totally nailed down.

The character of Wonder woman has obviously already featured in the DCEU’s modern wold in both Batman v Superman and the aforementioned Justice League film. So, assumedly, if Jenkins wants to make some sort of coherence with those films, it would need to follow on from those stories and perhaps reveal how she has evolved as a person now having saved the world a few times over and encountered a world with many other superheroes.

It is perhaps a little too soon to say that the DCEU is back after the massive success of Aquaman, but it does appear as if the studio has at least started to realise that meddling in the visions of its directors is not a good thing. So, does that mean that the DCEU could perhaps look forward to another attempt at a Justice League reunion any time soon? Patty Jenkin’s doesn’t think so, at least not once the solo characters are all a little more established:

I find those movies to be extremely challenging. I think they’re fantastic when they’re well done, but taking on all of those characters at the same time and the timeline. I sort of hope that we don’t do a Justice League movie for a little while, because I think that each of those characters are really great. I’m super excited to see each of their movies. I want to see Aquaman 2, and I want to see Flash. I don’t know. I would never say never, but I think everyone should have a moment to shine right now.

And I couldn’t’ agree more. One of the biggest problems with The Justice League movie was that it raced too quickly in introducing some of its big characters and tried to do in 3 movies what took Marvel many more to establish. Allowing each of the Justice League characters to have their own movies will mean that they can focus on just its main narrative and not rush saving the world.  

As for now though we still have a long wait ahead focus before any of that will happen, because Wonder Woman 1984 is only due for release on Jun 5, 2020. Which is more than enough time for DC and Warner Bros to ruin the franchise all over again.
